Position Description
GENERAL FUNCTION:
Under the general supervision of the Program Director, the Lead Instructor for the Gateway to Employment & Academic Readiness Program (G.E.A.R.) must teach mastery of secondary education competencies that prepare students for the high-school equivalency examinations in accordance with WIOA directives and applicable program guidelines. Instruction will be contextualized for adults who have exited the public school system prior to graduating and who are seeking educational advancement and employment that leads to family sustaining wages. Courses will include written and verbal communication, reading comprehension, mathematics, social studies, science, employability and life skills. This is a full-time, twelve month per year position that requires occasional evenings.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare students to successfully pass the HiSET or GED test series to earn a High School Equivalency Diploma by employing available texts, technology, and contextualized instruction
- Create a welcoming, engaging, and effective learning environment
- Use teaching methods designed for a variety of ages, academic levels, and learning styles
- Create lesson plans and present instruction based on the NCCCS College and Career Readiness Adult Education Standards
- Travel to various off-campus instructional sites and substitution for part-time instructors required
- Maintain all required paperwork and electronic records accurately, and submit required documentation in an organized and timely manner
- Mentor and train part-time instructors on local, state & federal policies; facilitate professional development activities for instructors as needed
- Assist team with departmental data collection, management, and reporting, striving to exceed NRS and NCCCS performance goals
- Attend required trainings, conferences, and webinars as needed
- Assist students with goal setting based on assessments, and assure that students stay on track toward graduation
- Assist with emphasizing classroom safety, good housekeeping, and equipment security
- Must have excellent communication skills and work cooperatively with other instructors and staff
- Must maintain complete confidentiality of students’ personal information as outlined by FERPA.
- Assist with departmental student attendance tracking and reporting to ensure state and federal compliance is met while maximizing potential for earned FTE.
- Assist program director with selecting and ordering textbooks/instructional materials and supplies
- Promote the program internally and externally throughout the community
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the director
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field from accredited four-year university/college
- Three years of teaching experience; preferably in Adult Education

- Computer Skills (WORD, Excel, PowerPoint)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience teaching adults and/or teaching in College and Career Readiness Programs
- Adult Education or K-12 Certification; Master’s Degree, NCCCS Adult Education Certification or equivalent
- Experience teaching secondary level math
- Experience with ADVANSYS or similar NRS/LEIS data reporting platform
- Knowledge of WIOA Title II - AEFLA policy and regulations
- Experience with CASAS and/or TABE assessments
