Bachelor's degree in Education, Instructional Design, Counseling or related discipline.

Knowledge and Skills    

Two years of college teaching or advising experience required.

Community college teaching and administrative experience preferred.

Ability to be a team player, a problem solver, to follow complex directions, to be a multi-tasker, while also having demonstrated ability to work independently with good judgment in decision-making

Equipment Operation

Required: Laptop Computer, Google Suite, Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree preferred.

Preferred: Willingness to learn software packages to assist in the development of student retention efforts and provide academic assistance

Position Description

Statement of Primary Purpose

The LAC Director is responsible for providing direction, information, individual attention and support to students needing academic support throughout their time at SCC. The director will ensure student understanding and connection to the support resources available. The director will recruit, schedule, train, and supervise tutors to provide academic support on campus and online.

 

The director will provide direct leadership and coordination of the Learning Assistance Center on the Jackson campus and will provide oversight for the Center on the Macon campus, including hiring and training of tutors, providing a secure proctoring environment and process, and ensuring access for students to online resources including the virtual tutoring platform.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train, and supervise qualified tutors.
  • Provide professional development for tutors in best practices for instructional support methods, current technologies for college-level coursework, and individual and small group facilitation methods.
  • Assist in budget formation and control, including travel, office supplies, equipment, payroll, and instructional supplies.
  • Maintain the Learning Assistance Center’s physical space on the Jackson campus, including computers and other technologies, submitting technology support work orders as appropriate.
  • Manage the annual planning, goal setting, and documentation of process for the LAC.
  • Support the college through direct outreach to encourage the use of Learning Assistance Center services. Use a variety of outreach methods including social media, website, direct outreach, and in-class presentations/demonstrations.
  • Assist in student retention.
  • Serve as campus liaison for academic support systems/software, including the online tutoring system.
  • Be responsible for personal professional development and maintaining professional competence.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and others.
  • Recruit eligible students and assist students and faculty in the development of Honors Project Proposals. Assist faculty in the development of collegewide Student Learning Symposiums
  • Instruct one section of online College Student Success course each year
  • Supervise the functions of the Macon Campus Learning Assistance Center Coordinator and assist them in providing a center that meets students' needs. 

 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in New Student Orientation, career days, job fairs, open houses, graduation ceremonies and other activities supporting student success
  • Serve on college standing committees and attend meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Licensing Requirement

Working Conditions and Environment

Standard College business hours Monday-Friday with some evening or weekend hours as needed.  

Position is based on the Jackson Campus with periodic travel to other SCC locations in Macon and Swain Counties.

Occasional travel outside the college service area may be required for professional development.

Experience with classroom technology, Google Meet, Moodle, and computer assisted instruction platforms.
