Position Description

The Librarian - Public Service is located on the Central Campus.  The primary responsibility is providing customer service and library support to students at multiple service points in the library, both in person on service desks and virtually through chat and other online services. Other responsibilities include:

  • Supervision of part-time library staff
  • Collection development responsibilities for assigned area(s) of the library's collection
  • Some library instruction, including in-person instruction, one-on-one appointments with students, and embedded support of assigned courses
  • Assisting Senior Librarian with desk schedules
  • Special projects such as displays, inventory, etc.
  • Active participation on at least one library committee

The work hours are Monday - Thursday: 9am - 6pm and Friday: 8am - 5pm with occasional nights and Saturdays.  The anticipated start date is July 1, 2021.

The library will be opening a new state-of-the-art Central Campus Library in 2022. The new library offer an array of spaces and services for students, including 25+ group study rooms, family study rooms, a learning commons, computer lab, innovative instruction classrooms, a quiet reading room, a faculty hub, event space, college archives, and a makerspace, among others.

 

General Function:

This position provides customer service support, reference, and instructional services, as well as having supervision and responsibility for projects and part-time staff. A Librarian is expected to demonstrate and maintain competence in each of the following functional areas.

 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

I. Mastery of Subject Matter

  1. Demonstrates a thorough and accurate knowledge of the field of library and information science.
  2. Displays an ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of library and information science.
  3. Connects the subject matter with related fields and the college curriculum.
  4. Stays current in subject matter through professional development, involvement in professional organizations, resource sharing organizations, and attending professional meetings, conferences or workshops.
  5. Exhibits an evolving proficiency with Office products, integrated library systems and web-based technologies, with a demonstrated ability to both enhance existing and create new public and internal services using technology.

 

II. Public Service Responsibilities

  1. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of print and electronic information resource.
  2. Provides high-quality reference services to students, faculty, and staff; demonstrates competence in assisting patrons with complex inquiries, requests, and projects requiring independent judgment and in-depth knowledge in interpreting policies and procedures.
  3. Provides effective circulation services, including reserves and study room scheduling.
  4. Trains students, faculty, and staff in the use of library equipment and resources.
  5. Develops a working knowledge of all public service points and an in-depth knowledge in interpreting and applying policies and procedures.

 

III. Support of Functional Area

  1. Develops displays that creates welcoming environment for students, faculty, and staff.
  2. Markets and promotes library resources and services.
  3. Plans, organizes, and manages projects.
  4. Trains, oversees, and provides leadership to part-time staff assigned to functional area; monitors performance, and reviews completed assignments.
  5. Creates, maintains, and updates daily desk schedule for multiple service points, with support of Librarian Senior
  6. Troubleshoots software and hardware issues.

 

IV. Teaching Performance

  1. Plans, develops, and teaches library and information literacy instruction to a diverse student population.
  2. Provides instructional support through chat, embedded librarianship, one-on-one appointments, and classroom library instruction.
  3. Collaborates with faculty in the design and delivery of information literacy instruction.

 

V. Collection Development Responsibilities

  1. Creates and places orders of library materials in multiple formats for assigned area(s) of library collection.
  2. Develops subject resources in assigned areas.
  3. Collaborates with departmental faculty to assess effectiveness and strength of collection in assigned subject disciplines.
  4. Participates in program accreditation as necessary.

 

VI. Technical Services Responsibilities

  1. Communicates with Technical Services staff about issues or abnormalities involving cataloging records, electronic holdings, integrated library systems, and library web site.

 

VII. Support of College Policies and Procedures

  1. Provides library services as assigned in a multi-campus environment.
  2. Interprets and enforces library and college policies and procedures.
  3. Maintains confidentiality of student information according to current state and federal law.
  4. Exercises stewardship of college facilities and materials.

 

VIII. Participation in College and Division Activities

  1. Participates in meetings and events required by the college and library administrators.
  2. Responds in a timely fashion to information requests from college and library administrators.
  3. Supports both part-time and full-time colleagues.
  4. Demonstrates leadership skills.
  5. Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff and administrators as an individual or on a team.

 

IX. Contribution to the Growth and Enhancement of College Mission and Programs

  1. Maintains familiarity with college goals, mission and long-range plans.
  2. Contributes to planning and development processes through appropriate mechanisms and channels.
