Minimum Qualifications

Required:  An Associate of Arts degree in an academic subject

Required:

  1. Customer service skills such as the ability to diffuse tense interactions, properly follow safety and security practices. Support users in need of assistance via telephone, chat, email and in-person with a positive attitude and provide users with basic computer support.
  2. Demonstrate effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Enthusiastic attitude and desire to work in a team environment.
  3. Previous library work experience as a student worker, or as library staff is required.
  4. Demonstrated ability to use library systems is required, specifically:
  1. Software such as LibGuides, Sirsi (or other) Library Management Systems and Summon (or similar) discovery tools.
  2. Spreadsheets for basic data collection and reporting.  
  1. Organize materials using the Dewey Decimal and/or the Library of Congress classification system and to explain and demonstrate its use. Accuracy and attention to detail in shelving and shelf-reading.
  2. Assist students with basic community college-level research and discern when an information or research referral to the Librarian or Director is needed.
  3. Proficient in word processing, spreadsheets, and other Office and/or Google suite software and the use of basic office equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred: A Bachelor’s degree or higher, from an accredited institution(s) of higher education in a related field

Preferred:

  1. Previous academic library work is preferred.
  2. Secondary or College teaching experience in an academic setting is preferred.

Position Description

Statement of Primary Purpose

The purpose of the Library Assistant is to serve as the primary staff person at the information desk providing knowledgeable services to users including basic demonstration in the use of library resources, troubleshooting of computers and printers, facilitating the technology lending process, answering phone, email and chat and referring more complex research question to a Librarian as needed. Serves as the primary staff person for circulation duties which requires strong technical skills and the ability to continually learn and utilize new library software for circulation of library materials and statistical reporting.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  1. Primary staff person serving users at the information desk and in charge of circulation duties such as registration of user accounts, circulation of library materials; maintaining records of lost materials and student holds; basic public computer and printer troubleshooting. Responsible for opening and/or closing the Library.
    1. Develop, update and document circulation processes and procedures.
    2. Provide quality control of circulation functions
    3. Create and manages the weekly “overdue” notices reports process including utilizing texting software to send out overdue notices to students.
    4. Retrieves and organizes statistical reports from library systems as assigned by the Director.
    5. Manage off-campus technology lending and the faculty reserves collection.
    6. Provide basic research and reference information, referring complex research questions to Librarian or Library Director when appropriate
  2. Contribute to timely shelving of materials; perform shelf reading to maintain accuracy in the collection; display new and notable books and keep shelved books orderly.
  3. Supervise the daily work of the library work-study students including training, scheduling, timesheet completion and providing appropriate tasks and projects.
  4. Represent Southwestern Community College with a collegial, service-oriented enthusiastic presence; willing to learn and work effectively as a team with library staff and work-study students. Show initiative in planning and executing position responsibilities.

 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

Physical Demands          

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic functions of grasping, light lifting, pushing, pulling, repetitive motions and communicating
  • Must have the ability to shelve and shift books and other library materials on the shelves and to push and pull loaded book carts. 
  • Must possess the ability to prepare and analyze data and figures, to operate a computer, and to do extensive reading in a timely manner.

 

Licensing Requirement

No license or certification is required for this position.

 

Working Conditions and Environment  

  • The Holt Library is a spacious building with adequate office space. Work is performed indoors in climate-controlled conditions. Each staff member must be able to supervise the building with security backup by the county sheriff’s department.
  • The Library Assistant is expected to assist with opening and closing procedures as needed.

 

Equipment Operation

Standard office and computer equipment. Online databases, programs, and instructional software.
