Minimum Qualifications
Associate Degree and 1 year of work experience in a library or bookstore; completion of college-level coursework and work experience 2 years work experience in library or bookstore
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated competencies in using technology, including but not limited to library computers, equipment (laptops, cameras, and projectors, etc.), library related software. and office applications, including Excel
Demonstrated ability to stay current with new information, methods, and training/activities related to working with a library ILS
Strong customer service skills
Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
Position Description
Library Technical Assistant position available on the Central Campus.
Central Piedmont Community College Libraries are committed to supporting student, faculty and staff with the best possible information services at each of its seven (7) physical campus location, as well as with electronic services through its web site. We directly support and strengthen teaching and learning by continually developing innovative student and learning-centered collections, services, and environments that lead to life-long educational development. The Library Technical Assistant is responsible for staffing public service desks at the library, using professional judgment in evaluating the request, understanding what the need is, determining what the best resource for the request is, and communicating that back to the student. In addition, the position:
• Maintains library stacks, including check-in, shelving, and shifting
• Monitors, stocks, and recommends purchases of supplies for assigned areas
• Participates in and coordinates projects related to functional area responsibilities, including desk statistics and marketing/library events
• Assists with upkeep of library equipment, including the library totem/kiosk
• Other duties as assigned
General Function
This position performs a variety of clerical and administrative tasks that require some independent judgment, including assisting patrons, locating resources or information, checking out books, collecting fines, gathering information, producing reports, monitoring and ordering supplies, receiving shipments, and sorting books in support of library’s daily operations.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
I. Understanding of Subject Matter
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of library organization and operations.
- Builds knowledge of library organization and operations through professional development opportunities offered within the library and the college.
- Demonstrates thorough understanding and use of Microsoft Office products and library operating systems such as circulation, reserves, media scheduler, etc
II. Functional Area Responsibilities
- Maintains library stacks, including re-shelving, reading, and the initiation of shifting projects.
- Checks-in and processes serials for all campuses, including serials stack maintenance.
- Maintains library equipment, including major repair, battery charging, and re-imaging.
- Monitors and recommends purchase of supplies for assigned area.
- Participates in and coordinates projects related to functional area responsibilities
III. Public Service Responsibilities
- Assists patrons at public service desks by providing information and assistance with library and college operations.
- Locates resources for patrons.
- Assists patrons with the use of library equipment.
- Circulates library materials and collects fines and fees from patrons.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators as an individual or part of a team.
IV. Technical Services Responsibilities
- Re-shelves materials and reads/straightens shelves to assist with collection maintenance.
- Assists with quality control of newly processed and gift materials.
- Assists with technical services and collection assessment projects.
- Assists with basic computer and equipment maintenance.
V. Support of College Policies and Procedures
- Provides library services as assigned in a multi-campus environment.
- Enforces library and college policies.
- Maintains confidentiality of student information.
- Exercises stewardship of college facilities and materials.
VI. Contribution to the Growth and Enhancement of College Mission and Programs.
- Contributes to the planning and development process through appropriate mechanisms and channels.
- Performs responsibilities in accordance with pertinent goals, missions, and plans of the college and library services.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Characteristics
