Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an academic discipline or in education and one year of library experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to use computer hardware, software applications including the Microsoft Office Suite, and electronic resources
  • Experience with utilizing a library management system and with copy cataloging in a shared library system

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent oral & written communication skills
  • Experience in an academic library setting
  • Knowledge of Library of Congress Classification System, NC LIVE, and SirsiDynix Symphony Workflows system

Position Description

GENERAL FUNCTION:

Performing duties as needed in order to provide library users with assistance in locating information. The employee will operate an automated library system, which is used for circulation, acquisitions, and cataloging, as well as working with print materials and electronic information sources.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • As the primary circulation desk staff member, on-demand desk duties include: opening/closing the library, as scheduled; providing public service (face-to-face and via phone/email); conducting circulation transactions; assisting patrons in the use of library materials and the online library catalog; finding books in the collection; using electronic sources (i.e., NC LIVE, Gale, and other electronic databases); registering and updating library accounts; making BCC IDs; utilizing the booking software to manage library reservations; capturing daily statistics via the desk log; collecting payment for fines and fees related to overdue and/or lost materials
  • As BCC’s liaison for interlibrary loan within the community college library system, duties include: fulfilling/receiving system holds for library materials; tracking missing interlibrary loan items; arranging compensation for lost interlibrary loan items from partner libraries
  • Recordkeeping duties include: overseeing the daily processes of overdue reports; preparing weekly deposits of receipts; compiling statistics on library use, both monthly and annually; maintaining and updating staff procedures manual as necessary; ordering, maintaining, and inventorying library supplies, ID machine supplies, and book processing materials
  • Serials management duties include: managing print subscriptions (i.e., journals, magazines, and newspapers); utilizing print subscription software to manage vendors and accounts; maintaining and organizing current and backfile periodical collections; receiving and processing library mail
  • Technology duties include: operating, utilizing, troubleshooting, and maintaining various library hardware/software, copier, computers, and printers; assisting patrons in the use of these devices
  • Collection management duties include: managing the process of incoming new library materials, from entry to cataloging and processing, in order to prepare items for circulation; performing basic book repair; sorting and shelving books and other library materials accurately according to the Library of Congress Classification System; searching for missing items; preparing and providing access to the Reserves collection each semester
  • Instruction/training duties include: giving library tours to various groups; teaching basic library orientation for classes and other groups when needed; educating library staff members and work study students on procedures for performing circulation desk duties and processing library materials
  • Generally respects user privacy according to FERPA and ALA guidelines; enforces library and college policies; participates in library programming and college-wide activities; interacts and communicates with individuals and groups, including students, supervisor, upper administration, co-workers, faculty, staff, sales representatives, and the general public; frequently interacts with Student Services, Foundation, Business Office, and Print Shop

 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a frequent basis and up to 20 pounds occasionally
  • Use hands and upper body to operate a variety of machines, tools, and equipment related to office and library processes
  • Walk, stand, reach while handling objects, stoop, and kneel for extended periods of time
