Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree
Graduation from an Interpreter Training Program (ITP)
Licensed with the North Carolina Interpreter/Transiliteration Licensing Board (NCITLB) or BEI (Board of Interpreting) Certification or National Interpreter/Transliterator Certification
Two years experience interpreting for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students in an educational setting at the secondary or post-secondary level utilizing both receptive and expressive interpreting
Supervision experience

Ability to work nights and weekends as needed for special events and coverage for interpreter cancellations 

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID/NIC), or Board of Interpreting Certification (BEI)

Position Description

The Manager, Interpreting and Transliterating Services schedules and assigns Real-Time Language Access, Sign Language Interpreters, and Transliterators for students and staff requesting services.  

Responsibilities and Duties (*Essential Functions)

Assesses the knowledge, skills and abilities of prospective Sign Language Interpreters and transliterators.  

Provides classroom and on-call interpreting/transliterating (i.e., Individualized Learning Center, teacher, or advisor conferences, graduation ceremonies, other school functions and substitutes for other interpreters in multi-modalities on an as-needed basis)
Assesses student needs and the interpreting/transliterating situation before and during assignments and makes adjustments as needed
Assists with the hiring of qualified interpreters and transliterators
Schedules and assigns interpreters, captioners, and transliterators for classes and college functions
Provides supervision for interpreters, captioners, and transliterators
Meets with students and faculty members to problem solve classroom issues with interpreters, captioners, and transliterators

Responds to reoccurring urgent situations to ensure deaf and hard of hearing students have classroom coverage for interpreter cancellations 

Receives and reviews billing statements from interpreters, captioners, and transliterators working as independent contractors
Reviews interpreter and transliterator time sheets for accuracy
Meets with DSS Coordinator to determine the need of interpreting and transcribing services
Evaluates interpreters and transliterators and offers suggestions for performance improvement
Provides awareness training and suggestions to students and/or instructors regarding deaf issues
Maintains contact with national organizations and other post-secondary institutions to keep abreast of current issues and changes in the field of interpreting and speech-to-text service provision.

Qualifications -Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Possess the ability to listen and interpret/transliterate both receptively and expressively, in all settings in the college.
Working knowledge of Deaf/Hard of Hearing disabilities and their manifestations and consequences
Considerable knowledge of a variety of sign languages used by consumers as well as the unique needs of clients in an educational setting
Intermediate skills in operating a computer and various software packages
Ability to problem solve
Ability to effectively manage and prioritize the work to meet student, staff and administrative needs
Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form
Ability to work with people of diverse age groups and social, cultural, economic, and ethnic backgrounds
