Position Description

DEFINITION:

To provide classroom instruction to student inmates through lecture, demonstration, laboratory exercises, handouts, responding to questions, and testing.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Receives supervision and direction from Director, Special Programs, Economic and Workforce Development.
  • Exercises no supervision.

 

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

 

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to:

 

Essential Functions:

  • Adhere to all guidelines, rules, policies and procedures of New Hanover Correctional Center.
  • Follow college policies and procedures and ensure adherence by students.
  • Provide classroom instruction to students. 
  • Prepare course syllabus in accordance with the NC Combined Course Library, lesson plans and schedule classroom activities. Modify as needed.
  • Develop supplemental materials and/or visual aides to enhance textbook learning.
  • Participate in curriculum development, evaluation and changes as needed.
  • Maintain accurate student attendance records, and performance. Maintain other records and/or databases in accordance with program and accreditation requirements.
  • Remain current through the certifying organizations of the trade pertaining to the classes taught. Make necessary changes as needed. 

 

 

Other Important Functions:

  • Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lessons format.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

 

Qualifications

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Knowledge:

  • Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures.
  • Principles and procedures of academic and instructional techniques and procedures.
  • Current trends, research and development in the area of assignment.
  • Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration.
  • Expertise in the Masonry field.

 

Ability To:

  • Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, rules, and regulations 
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
  1. making observations
  2. communicating with others
  3. reading and writing
  4. recognizing and responding to questions
  5. operating assigned equipment
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities that may include the following:
  1. sitting and standing for extended periods of time 
  2. operating assigned equipment - overhead projector, computer
  3. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain mental capacity that allows the capability of:
  1. making sound decisions
  2. answering questions
  3. demonstrating intellectual capabilities
  4. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 

Minimum Education/Training:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Work Environment:

  • This position is located at a correctional facility.
  • This position receives specific direction relating to correctional policies and procedures from Administrative and Custodial staff at the prison work site.
