Minimum Qualifications

The Medical Assisting and Allied Health Program Coordinator must have:

  • Have the educational and/or training background to ensure effective teaching in the appropriate subject areas.  Requirements for professional and scholarly preparation are those adopted by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
  • A minimum of an associate degree awarded by an educational institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, as documented with an official transcript or a comparable English translation of a foreign transcript from an approved national agency
  • Evidence of courses/content in educational theory and techniques
  • A Medical assisting credential from a NCCA accredited credentialing organization as documented by official certificate or letter from the certifying organization
  1. Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) (preferred)
  2. Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • A minimum of three (3) years recent experience in healthcare, including a minimum of 160 hours of experience in an ambulatory healthcare setting performing or observing administrative and clinical procedures performed by medical assistants. This may be documented by providing evidence of employment as a medical assistant or in another healthcare field
  • Have a minimum of one year teaching experience in postsecondary and/or vocational/technical education.
  • Have an understanding of and a commitment to community college education and the concept of a learning centered, open-admissions, college
  • Have a commitment to the academic success of all students
  • Be able to relate to students, faculty and staff in a congenial and professional manner
  • Demonstrate ability to lead and direct colleagues
  • Demonstrate knowledge of instructional systems design and production
  • Demonstrate an ability to speak and write effectively
  • Utilize computer technology

Position Description

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the appropriate Dean, the Program Coordinator is responsible for the growth and development of the program, including keeping current with new technology, recommending and implementing curriculum changes, assisting with the selection and training of full and part-time faculty, developing program budgets, helping to insure that needed equipment and supplies are up to date and available, and assisting with the recruitment and retention of students on all Mitchell campuses.

 

This faculty positon is responsible for instructional, advising, and other duties.  Instructional activities require, among other things, subject matter expertise and a thorough preparation for every instructional responsibility. Advising duties demand knowledge of the students’ chosen field of study, as well as an understanding of registration, testing, and other procedures.  Other responsibilities include, completion of necessary paperwork, serving on committees, attending College functions, and recruitment and retention activities.

 

The Medical Assisting Program Coordinator is responsible for:

a. Effectiveness of the Medical Assisting program

b. Medical Assisting program organization

c. Medical Assisting program administration

d. Continuous program review

e. Program planning and development

f. Maintaining Program Accreditation

             

Essential duties and responsibilities:

Working with the Dean, the Medical Assisting Program Coordinator will assist Faculty with:

  • Course instruction and planning
  • Classroom management
  • Implementation of program goals and objectives
  • Securing externship opportunities
  • Textbook selections
  • Requisition of equipment and supplies
  • Planning and implementation of individual development activities

 

The Medical Assisting Program Coordinator will assist the Dean by:

  • Securing data on allied health programs
  • Coordinate and/or collaborate on allied health offerings with continuing education allied health team
  • Implementing activities as a result of program review
  • Making arrangements for classes in event of faculty absence
  • Providing mentoring for faculty
  • Selection and evaluation of adjunct faculty
  • Providing adjunct faculty with text, syllabi, handbook, roll book, and other teaching materials as needed
  • Assisting with recruitment and retention of students for the program area
  • Assisting with the development, implementation and evaluation of annual program goals and objectives
  • Developing the program budget
  • Jointly working with all Program Coordinators to develop course schedules on a semester and yearly basis
  • Coordinating competency exams

 

Related Responsibilities:

  • Work with other faculty to plan, implement and evaluate the program of learning
  • Providing an avenue for the exchange of information with full-time and adjunct faculty to maintain consistency in the program
  • Informing Dean of issues and concerns in the program area
  • Providing leadership to the program advisory committee, assisting the Dean as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
