Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education/Training:

 

Associates degree with major course work in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.

 

Minimum Experience:

 

Two years of work experience in Information Technology or related field.

Experience in higher education, preferably the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS).

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:

 

MCSA or MCITP certification with 3 or more years of experience in

 

  • Installing, configuring, and troubleshooting Network Server Operating Systems and applications for both servers and workstations.

 

  • The use and support of Microsoft Operating Systems and Servers.

 

  • System security experience including virus protection and system hardening.

 

  • Experience with Microsoft and/or Linux OS environments along with experience in network transport protocols and Wide Area Networking preferred.

 

  • Knowledge of network and security management best practices preferable.

 

  • Knowledgeable of IT Auditing principals a plus.

 

Desired relevant certifications or certified instructor lead training in one or more of the following:

 

  • CompTIA A+
  • CompTIA Network +
  • CompTIA Security +

DEFINTION: 

Microsoft Systems Administrator is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, security, and reliable operation of Enterprise level servers, appliances, storage systems, and peripherals. Microsoft Systems Administrator, also, is responsible for the installation, administration, maintenance, and security of Enterprise wide applications running within the Enterprise server environment.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: 

  • Receives general supervision from the Infrastructure Team Manager.
  • Exercises no supervision.

 

 

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

 

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTION STATEMENTS - Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

 

Essential functions:

 

  • Setup and configure new Enterprise Systems including hardware, operating system, and network access.

 

  • Provide support in the operation of Microsoft, and Linux server systems, de-bugging operating systems and performance of software maintenance.

 

  • Implement, install, reconfigure and/or replace hardware/software enhancements and patches supporting our Enterprise systems and services. 

 

  • Enhancement and maintenance of system security including, but not limited to, application of patches, managing user logins, virus and hacker prevention, keeping server data secure from unauthorized access, and maintaining network “best practices” in local and wide-area connections.

 

  • Monitor, configure, and troubleshoot all aspects of the Enterprise Systems, to include, but not limited to Microsoft, Linux services, including Webservers, SQL databases, DHCP, DNS, Print Servers, MS O365 and applications that use these services.

 

  • Installation, management, troubleshooting and maintenance of applications that run from the Enterprise Systems. 

 

  • Analyze and diagnose software and client/server related problems in order to develop and implement solutions

 

  • Participate in research and development to provide resource support for recommendations on hardware and software purchases.

 

  • Ensure the monitoring of network services to include spool queue printing systems, computer, and systems, file servers, batteries, and other peripherals, and monitor Internet connections and electronic mail systems.

 

  • Perform or delegate system backup operations, verify the validity of the process; review system(s) logs for system quality control.

 

  • Assist in the design and implement appropriate processes for data protection, disaster recovery, and failover procedures.

 

  • Assist in the design and implement of Enterprise wide security strategies for Enterprise servers, appliances, storage systems, the network, Enterprise dispersed computer systems, and peripherals including intrusion and virus protection.

 

Other Important Functions:

 

  • Assist in compiling and maintenance of IT Service’s knowledge base for documenting problems, solutions, processes, and procedures for the Enterprise wide computer systems.

 

  • Maintain records of all work activities, including the repair, maintenance, testing, and replacement of computer and peripheral equipment. Prepare regular progress reports.

 

  • Assist in maintaining computer system related materials and supplies.

 

  • Assist in the disposal of outdated or unwanted computer equipment and records.

 

  • Assist in keeping IT Services’ facilities and related storage areas organized, maintained, and clean.

 

  • Provide resource support for recommendations on computer hardware and software purchases.

 

  • Provide cross-level/discipline support when necessitated by limited staffing.

 

  • Support integration of servers/workstations into a mixed O/S environment.

 

  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

 

  • This position may include day, evening, weekend, or off-campus assignments.

 

Qualifications

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Knowledge of:

 

  • Microsoft Network, Security, and Operating Systems (server and workstation installation, configuration and troubleshooting.

 

  • Microsoft applications and services such as, but not limited to, DHCP, DNS, FTP, IIS, Intune, O365, SCCM, SharePoint, and SQL.

 

  • Security and file system administration.

 

  • Current Network Operating Systems, authentication services, hierarchical directory structures, protocols, configurations and various computer software programs and their application.

 

  • Operations processes, including incident response, patch management, and change control.

 

  • Local and Wide Area Networking and fundamentals of network transport protocols including TCP/IP and services such as DHCP and DNS.

 

  • Components and parts used in modern computer equipment.

 

  • Basic principles and procedures of record keeping and database management.

 

  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

 

  • Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.

 

  • Basic arithmetic.

 

  • Should be a highly motivated team player with excellent communication skills.

  • Experience in implementation and administration of MS Active Directory, Group Policies, Microsoft O365

 

  • Working knowledge of VMWare or Hyper-V

 

  • Working knowledge of SQL Database administration

 

  • Hands-on experience with Terminal Services, RDP, VPN and/or VNC

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES: - Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
