REQUIREMENTS:

Required:  Bachelor degree.  Knowledge of the college admissions process to include financial aid information.  Understanding of community agencies and career options to include internship opportunities. Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and school administrators.  Perform tasks independently.  
 
Preferred:  Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or related field.  Bilingual; Career Readiness Certificate (CRC)
 
Experience
 
Required:  Some recent experience working with high school students, industry related career development, academic counseling, career awareness, or college admissions process.  
 
Preferred:  Considerable experience working in industry related career development, high school, and/or community college setting.   Considerable experience with industry related career development, academic counseling, career awareness, and college admissions process.

Position Description

The North Carolina Career Coach will serve as a campus liaison for Duplin County high schools.  This position will interact with high school administration, academic and career technical education coordinators, teachers, school counselors, and staff to provide career/college/job information for high school students.  They will work with students to explore career options, develop career plans, and investigate career pathway options at James Sprunt Community College (JSCC).  Participate and help coordinate JSCC events, such as job fairs, college fairs, and financial aid information sessions.  Serve as the point of contact for prospective JSCC students and assist high school students & parents regarding admission processes.  Work with secondary and postsecondary staff to ensure coordination of high school and college schedules that allow access to required coursework. This position reports to the Associate Vice President of Student Services. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in application and admissions process for pending high school graduates who plan to attend JSCC or other postsecondary institutions. 
  • Provide assistance and support with placement test administration. 
  • Develop rapport and trust with students to support successful goal completion. 
  • Advise students in academic, career, and successful goal-setting via scheduled and walk-in appointments.
  • Monitor student progress and conduct advising sessions with students on a regular basis. 
  • Assist students and school officials to problem-solve issues that arise which impact academic goals, persistence, and attendance. 
  • Collect, compile, analyze, and document records and reports.
  • Promote the College mission, values and vision.
  • Monitor student assessment scores, grades, and attendance while maintaining advising logs to track contact hours, issues, and outcomes of advising sessions. 
  • Provide training sessions to students in career planning, secondary/postsecondary educational information, and financial aid availability.
  • Acquire computer/technology competencies as appropriate to position.
  • Maintain security of personal computer access.
  • Perform other professional or job-related duties as assigned.
  • Serve on college committees as directed by supervisor.
  • Work closely with the Career and College Promise Liaison to monitor CCP student progress throughout the semester.
