OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY:

The NC Career Coach will cultivate programs and services for the high school learner so individuals can successfully enter and advance in a career path. The NC Career Coach will assist students in evaluating their abilities, interests, talents and personality characteristics in order to develop realistic academic and career goals by utilizing interviews, advising sessions, interest and aptitude assessment tests, and other methods. 

NOTE: This is a five-year, state-funded grant position. Annual appointments are subject to annual reauthorization of state funds under the State General Fund appropriation. Continued appointment is contingent upon the availability of funding.

This position will be primarily located at New Bern High School.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports outreach efforts involving high school learners to raise career awareness of opportunities and assist in enrollment of high school learner at the college level
  • Supports student’s efforts for career pathways
  • Coordinates events designed to promote awareness of career pathways
  • Works with high school/college personnel to prepare information related to career pathways for distribution to students and parents
  • Follows a communication plan to ensure consistent communication with students, faculty, staff parents, etc.
  • Organizes college campus tours
  • Maintains contact with select advisees using a proactive advising model
  • Assists with academic/career advising for high school learners
  • Maintains accurate and adequate student records to assist in the annual mandatory reporting required by the grant
  • Provides information to college personnel regarding course needs for high school students
  • Maintains current knowledge of information related to high school, community colleges, universities, and military pathways policies and procedures as well as information related to community workforce development resources to provide students with timely information and guidance to assist students in making informed decisions
  • Maintains compliance with NACADA core values and competencies for academic advising
  • Maintains current knowledge of the roles of collaborators in the high school through the NC Career Coach Advisory Board and develops partnerships with this group
  • Provides supportive interventions to help students success in high schools/college courses; provides academic success strategies to facilitate successful transition into the college environment
  • Conducts workshops and classroom visits with enrolled students at the high school and enhanced partnership to inform and instruct the students concerning Pathways requirements
  • Recommends procedures for maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines such as coordination of ADA & IDEA, FERPA, etc.
  • Develops professional relationships with business and industry leaders to remain knowledgeable about the careers available for graduates entering the workforce
  • Coordinates with local business leaders to offer high school learners opportunities to learn about career availability in the service area and coordinates tours with local industries to expose students to various career pathways
  • Participates in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College’s mission, core values and goals

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

Two (2) years’ experience in secondary and/or post-secondary education.

Preferred:

Experience with or demonstrated knowledge of career services.

Experience with Colleague.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of college admission and advising guidelines, standards and procedures
  • Knowledge of diagnostic tests used to assess preparation for college study
  • Knowledge of transfer requirements and articulation agreements
  • Knowledge of career planning principles and practices
  • Knowledge of college policies and procedures, academic requirements, campus resources, financial aid, student life and support services
  • Knowledge of federal, state and college requirements regarding FERPA and other applicable laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of community resources and community organizations

 

Skills

  • Demonstrates a high degree of initiative and independent judgment; uses discretion within current policies and procedures
  • Evaluating student’s academic interests and desires and formulating plans designed to assist the student in achieving their goals
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving and time management skills
  • Interpersonal skills with proven ability to work in a team environment
  • Demonstrates proficiency in a variety of Windows-based computer programs relative to performing responsibilities, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrates skill in public speaking and delivering presentations to individuals and groups
  • Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
