Knowledge and abilities:
Standard network protocols and network management requirements.
Internet protocol, threat management, and intrusion detection systems.
Routing and switching best practices and implementation.
Microsoft operating systems, particularly Microsoft Server.
Firewall operating systems, policies and maintenance.
Various security/intrusion protection software and hardware options.
Backup systems, disaster recovery requirements and disaster recovery procedures.
Read and comprehend complicated instructions for implementation of computer applications, software fixes and software upgrades.
Problem-solve complex data, computer and technical issues.
Work in a fast paced environment under a variety of conditions and constraints.
Network with the Network Administrators from other colleges, IT department employees, vendors and peers.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of staff and faculty.
Communicate clearly both verbally and in written communications.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities.
Education/Skills
Required: Associates Degree in an information-technology-related field or certification equivalent(s) and one year experience in enterprise networking setting as well as substantial knowledge of networking, strong trouble-shooting skills, and related work experience.
Preferred: Bachelor's degree in computer science or closely related field and computer certification in computer networking, computer security or other computer related certifications. Bilingual. Career Readiness Certificate (CRC).
Experience
Required: Considerable experience with computer software/hardware maintenance and some experience in network management and networking equipment.
Preferred: Extensive experience planning and maintaining network infrastructures and
maintaining network servers including some experience with Microsoft Server 2016 and 2019 and some experience with virtualization.

HIRING SALARY RANGE
MINIMUM HIRING SALARY: $41,419.00 annually
MAXIMUM HIRING SALARY: Depends on qualifications
Under the direct supervision of the Associate Vice President of the Department of Information Technology, the Network Administrator is responsible for the maintenance of hardware and software that comprises the James Sprunt Community College LAN. This includes the deployment, configuration, maintenance and monitoring of network equipment and cabling as well as the maintenance of the network file servers, SANs and all network security devices and software. Coordinate with the other DoIT Department employees to determine the best and most secure configuration for desktop computers. Work as a team member of the DoIT Department to support the staff and faculty in their use of computer hardware and software.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Campus Local Area Network Responsibilities:
- Deploy, configure, maintain and monitor active network equipment in order to establish a secure, efficient and accessible LAN for the College.
- Recommend, deploy and configure upgrades and expansions of the College's local area network.
- Establish security procedures and workflow for maintaining authentication and authorization for network access. This includes managing file share permissions and Active Directory rights/group policies.
- Recommend and manage hardware and software configurations in computer labs and for public use computers in order to leverage access with security and responsible use.
- Establish and maintain off-campus networks including access to the internet and to the College's LAN if required, recommending the most efficient and secure means of establishing access to the internet or the College's LAN. Maintain and monitor the cabling infrastructure for the College's local area network, resolving problems and providing access for users.
- Plan and deploy any required expansion of the local area network cabling infrastructure.
- Maintain cabling and equipment necessary for off-campus sites, their network and any required access.
- Recommend, deploy and maintain a secure wireless network.
- Establish a working relationship with the college's Internet provider(s) to provide and support internet access to faculty, staff and students on-campus and at the College's off-campus sites. Assist the ISP with problem resolution when necessary.
- Plan, deploy, configure and maintain servers that anchor the local area network, maintaining user and data security, completing upgrades and managing software. Establish and maintain network services required for user access to the network, to network software, and to the Internet including but not limited to DNS, DHCP and Active Directory.
- Plan, deploy, configure and maintain file servers and data storage to support the requirements of the College's mission and requirements.
- Analyze the data and video traffic flow in order to optimize the use of the local area network for efficiency and access.
- Plan, deploy, configure and maintain Storage Area Network(s) (SANs) in order to provide the College secure, accessible and reliable data storage access.
- Create and manage group policies in an Active Directory environment for software deployment.
- Maintain Windows Server Update services, updates and patch management in a network environment.
Campus Security Responsibilities:
- Recommend, deploy and manage security systems in order to establish a secure network, including firewalls, intrusion protection, and all end point security products.
- Advise the Coordinator of DoIT on best practices to maintain College-wide data, hardware, and software security.
- Provide routine maintenance of those security systems including hardware, hardware upgrades, software and policies in order to maximize the local area network security but also allow employees to fulfill their work responsibilities.
- Work in conjunction with other DoIT Department employees to assist staff and faculty in the prevention of viruses, adware, worms, and denial of service attacks or other malicious software attacks on the college's computers or computer network.
- Recommend campus-wide policies that satisfy auditor requirements and provide maximum security for the college's computer network still providing an effective environment for staff and faculty.
- Establish and maintain backup systems and software in order to provide problem resolution and disaster recovery for the College.
Other DoIT Department Responsibilities:
- Determine, with the assistance of the other DoIT Department employees, the most effective desktop configurations of software that can be administered efficiently and also provide optimum capabilities for staff and faculty in their job responsibilities.
- Assist in help desk ticket completion and administration in order to maintain information on the DoIT Department workflow.
- Communicate clearly with the other employees of the DoIT department about all work being planned, those tasks completed, and problem resolution.
- Attend workshops, conferences and meetings as necessary
- Acquire computer/technology competencies as appropriate to position;
- Assist with equipment and software maintenance.
- Maintain security of personal computer access.
- Perform other professional or job-related duties as assigned.
- Serve on college committees.
