Minimum Qualifications

Requires an Associate’s degree in networking technology, computer networking or related field supplemented by two years or less of responsible experience in computer technology, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Position Description

Maintains and repairs network physical plant activities including cable installation, terminating lines, and certifying network connectivity.

Responds to customer service requests such as moving, adding, and changes to telephones, data connections including requests to change network services and add new services.

Performs basic configuration and end-user support of select devices, installs, tests, and monitors network equipment including switches, routers, firewalls, wireless LAN controllers, access points, web filters, network servers, cameras, and telephones.

Performs basic administration of select network servers such as file servers, network management applications, wireless applications and video surveillance management servers; virtualization and data center hardware.

Operates a variety of office and specialized network related equipment, including tone generator, continuity tester, etc., as well as, drills, saws and other tools needed for installation of various equipment.

Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge of Job:  Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Information Technology and Services Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Network Technician. Has knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards, and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has knowledge in the areas of computer/network technology and maintenance, information systems management, communications technology, etc. Is able to provide effective user assistance. Is skilled in troubleshooting and resolving hardware and software problems.  Is able to install new equipment and systems.  Has knowledge of the standard tools, materials, and practices of the industry. Is skilled in the care and use of required tools and equipment. Has knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision.  Is able to plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.  Is skilled in organizational, technical, and human relations skills.  Is able to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.  Has knowledge of proper English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar. Has knowledge of modern office practices and technology. Has the mathematical ability to handle required calculations. Is able to read and interpret technical materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Is able to assemble and analyze information and make written reports and records in a concise, clear, and effective manner.  Has thorough knowledge of the terminology and various professional languages used within the department. Is able to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation. Is able to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
