Minimum Qualifications
Ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse educational levels and capabilities. Accurate typing, filing, and shelving skills. Attention to detail is a must. Proficient in a Windows environment. Ability to undertake concurrent tasks, meet deadlines, and set reasonable goals. Ability to work independently and with supervisor and co-workers in a challenging environment. Outstanding customer service and trouble-shooting skills. Commitment to flexibility in scheduling and assignments.
Associate’s Degree in Library Information Technology, Business Administration or similar field. Library experience. Current knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Office 365.
Preferred Qualifications
Eexperience in an academic or community college setting is preferred. Familiarity with Office 365/OneDrive is preferred.
Position Description
General Description of the Position:
The Library Assistant, under the supervision of the Day Librarian, is responsible for library technical functions involving the cataloging, maintenance, and circulation of library materials; performing data entry for the online catalog; preparing library orders and working with vendors; staffing the circulation desk on a regular schedule; and providing clerical support where needed. May be asked to open or close library. May include evening hours.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:
- Technical processing of library materials which includes:
- Receipt and check-in of orders
- Searching WorldCat (OCLC) for proper bibliographic records
- Verifying bibliographic information and data entry
- Physical processing of materials, including applying dust jackets, plastic covers, labels, pockets, security tags, and other identifying information
- Removing identifying information from deselected items
- Data entry for the library’s catalog includes:
- Processing new library accounts, including data entry, proofing spelling, and noting missing information
- Deleting items that have been lost or removed from the collection
- Preparing Library orders includes:
- Familiarity with the College’s purchasing process
- Working with vendors to place, process, and troubleshoot orders
- Verifying invoices for payment and shipments for completeness
- Maintaining current and accurate order files
- Staffing the circulation desk includes:
- Greeting students and visitors, checking for IDs or visitor passes
- Assisting library users with the online catalog and navigating the library’s website
- Creating new library accounts, checking materials out/in, answering general questions
- Collecting fines and fees, creating receipts and documentation, reconciling accounts, and preparing reports for the business office on a bi-weekly basis
- Receives, sorts, and processes mail daily for the library.
- Shelves items under the LC classification system, ensures the collection is maintained and organized according to shelving rules. Shelf reads on a regular basis.
- Maintains high level of professional skills and abilities through reading and by attendance at seminars, workshops, and conferences.
- Other duties as assigned by the Day Librarian
