Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Math, English, Sciences, or other related fields
• Two years of experience counseling and advising individuals with disabilities, and/or college students from low-income, first-generation and diverse backgrounds
• Experience in academic support program development and academic tutoring
• Knowledge and/or experience working in a TRIO program or related work experience and collegiate procedures experience
• Public relations skills and advocate for disadvantaged students
• Proven ability to gain the respect of the internal and external constituent community
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s Degree preferred
• Familiarity with ADA law/disability services, financial aid requirements and college admissions
• Preference given to individuals who have succeeded in overcoming economic, social and academic barriers similar to the program participants
• Experience with Blumen or other database management systems
Position Description
Forsyth Technical Community College is a catalyst for equitable economic mobility, empowering lives and transforming communities. As aligned with the college’s vision and mission, provides comprehensive advising services to individuals identified as TRIO-Student Support Services (SSS) grant participants, which targets retention/graduation/transfer of low-income, first-generation and/or students with disabilities enrolled in a curriculum program. The Academic Counselor will provide for the wide range of activities related to academic advising and counseling students in the TRiO program. The Academic Counselor will also make the appropriate connections & referrals to college & community resources. The Academic Counselor works closely with the TRiO Director to ensure success in meeting the Program’s purpose and objectives.
• Conduct one-on-one advising meetings with program participants pertaining to academic, career, transfer and graduate school admissions. One-on-one advising sessions will provide timely, appropriate and accurate information on majors, admission requirements, resources and follow-up.
• Interpret the College catalog for the purposes of advising.
• Assist students in identifying majors and selecting appropriate coursework.
• Conduct intake interview with program participants.
• Enter student contacts and forms in program database.
• Follow policies and procedures on file reviews; documentation; confidentiality and data management.
• Design, implement and conduct workshops for program participants pertaining to financial literacy, career planning, time management, test anxiety, and transfer school enrollment.
• Also, serve as a resource for faculty, staff, and administrators for issues pertaining to program participants that are first-generation, low income and/or students with disabilities.
• Meet with the TRiO Director and program staff to discuss student needs.
• Collaborate to market and inform program participants and campus community of program specific activities.
• Conduct academic and career assessments with program participants.
• Provide information for internal reports.
• Maintains student confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
• Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, students, community members and constituents in a diverse, professional manner in and/or outside of the educational environment.
• Manage multiple tasks, be organized and detail oriented.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
• Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
• Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
• Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
• Perform basic mathematical operations in problem solving.
• Develop and compile statistical information that may require the knowledge of fractions, percentages and other mathematical concepts.
REASONING ABILITY:
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
• Understand and be committed to the unique nature and role of the College.
• Demonstrated personal and professional competence in the field of personal, social, academic, and career counseling.
• Ability to use computer to communicate, complete research, maintain records, and prepare documents.
• Exceptional skills in interpersonal relations.
