Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline.
  • Two years of full-time experience as a registered sonographer in the professional sonography field. Full-time is defined as 35 hours per week.
  • Current Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) credential.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  •  Must have course work in instructional methodologies, evaluation, and assessment. Must demonstrate proficiency in curriculum development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in a Health Science field; Post-secondary level teaching experience; possess the appropriate credential(s) specific to one or more of the concentration(s) offered such as RDCS, RVT, and/or RMSKS.
  • Teaching experience, especially at the post-secondary level, is preferred.

The purpose of the Medical Sonography Program Director (12 Month) at the Central Carolina Community College, in addition to teaching, is the administration of all the programs in the department. This is accomplished through continuous evaluation and revision of course objectives, course outlines, course competencies, course descriptions, teaching strategies, in the specific curriculum to ascertain that they are appropriate and relevant as well as the management of personnel and resources.

This position is open until filled.

Essential Duties

  1. Embrace the institutional goals of Central Carolina Community College by engaging students as full partners in the learning process, removing barriers for student progression in the Medical Sonography program, and supporting and assisting students in achieving their educational goals.
  2. Use teaching methodology that incorporates Medical Sonography concepts in a dynamic instructional environment that promotes a positive and interactive learning experience for all students.
  3. Provide students with adequate attention and instruction to acquire the knowledge needed to demonstrate CAAHEP competency standards and to meet graduation requirements.
  4. Foster an environment within the sonography department that is positive, collaborative, supportive, and nurturing to all faculty, engage faculty as team members within the department, and seek faculty input on departmental decisions.
  5. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the changes in the healthcare industry as it relates to Diagnostic Medical Sonography; assist the program director with the creation of new courses and modify existing courses when appropriate to keep current with new rules and regulations.
  6. Actively participate in academic advising for the Medical Sonography program and collaborate with the academic success team to offer resources to students.
  7. Actively participate in advisory board, department, college or system meetings, and/ or committees; participate in college-related activities such as recruitment of students into the Medical Sonography program; and participate in activities required to maintain program and college accreditation standards.
  8. Responsible for coordinating clinical education with didactic education in collaboration with the Clinical Coordinator.
  9. Assist the Clinical Coordinator with establishing and maintaining relationships with representatives of the clinical sites in which students are placed.
  10. Evaluate and ensure the effectiveness of the clinical affiliate/clinical education centers.
  11. Demonstrate the ability to prioritize effectively, make both short-term and long-term planning goals for the program, and meet deadlines consistently.
  12. Teach 12-15 contact hours per semester.
  13. Ensure that program outcomes and student learning outcomes are developed for each program and all courses in the department.
  14. Prepare proficiency exams as applicable and establish a plan for administering all proficiency exams.
  15. Maintain accurate and complete records as required, submit timely reports, and ascertain that personnel being supervised do likewise.
  16. Keep your supervisor advised of all matters pertaining to the department.
  17. Evaluate and select textbooks, and prepare and submit complete textbook orders to the bookstore manager
  18. Notify supervisor when planning to be off campus during normal working hours.
  19. Design and implement a plan and schedule for all registration and drop/add activities.
  20. Design and implement a plan for improving and tracking student retention for all curricula within the department.
  21. Assist, as requested, in the selection of full-time faculty for the department.
  22. Oversee/Select all sonography faculty on all sites where department courses are taught, prepare and submit part-time contracts, and prepare and submit all required supporting documents within the time frame required.
  23. When employing part-time faculty, determine that all faculty meet the credential requirement(s) for that position.
  24. Place a written justification in an individual faculty member's file if an emergency situation demands that an instructor teaches a class on a temporary basis without the required qualifications. That situation should be remedied as soon as a qualified person can be found and so noted in the file.
  25. Oversee/Supervise all sonography faculty in all areas of instruction including the following:
    1. Provide all sonography faculty with all college and instructional materials.
    2. Complete all necessary employment paperwork.
    3. Make arrangements for the faculty member to participate in an orientation to the college.
    4. Determine sonography faculty's office hours making sure that the times and locations are posted and distributed to the students.
    5. Ensure that all faculty are thoroughly trained on all equipment.
    6. Make proper arrangements for classes if the instructors are absent from class.
    7. Share the results of the student evaluations with the instructors each term.
  26. Conduct an annual performance appraisal of all sonography faculty.
  27. Plan and conduct regular periodic departmental meetings and file with your supervisor the minutes of those meetings.
  28. Be responsible for ensuring all the Compliance Assist Assessment for all programs within the department is completed in a timely manner.
  29. Supervise and maintain an inventory of all departmental equipment, materials, and supplies.
  30. Select all departmental equipment and submit appropriate requisitions to your supervisor.
  31. Organize and maintain an active advisory board for all curriculums within the department, meeting twice per year and submit minutes of those meetings to your supervisor and document on Compliance Assist.
  32. Maintain personal contact with business, industry, and professional agencies relevant to the department.
  33. Direct the development of new curricula to meet the demands of the labor market.
  34. Schedule classes and assign faculty to include all sites where department courses are taught.
  35. Plan and implement articulation activities with public school, sister, and senior higher education colleagues as applicable.
  36. Cooperate with Continuing Education Department personnel and Industrial Coordinator in the development of credit and non-credit courses, course outlines, and in the assignment of faculty as needed.
  37. Cooperate with Learning Resources to assure that an adequate quantity of up-to-date library books and support materials are available.
  38. Ascertain that all faculty keep their skills and knowledge current and develop new skills as demanded by the job market.
  39. Obtain a Blackboard Level I training as well as maintain a Bb course site for each course taught during the semester.
  40. Work the required 35 hours per week and post and hold the required five (5) office hours per week.
  41. Complete the five-hour staff development requirement annually.
  42. Submit records and forms in a timely fashion as required in the policy and procedures manual.
  43. Serve on college committees as assigned.
  44. Actively participate in professional organizations. 
  45. Maintain current industry licensure and credentials, including earning annual CME/CEUs.
  46. Be responsible for and perform other such duties as may be assigned.
