Degree Requirements:
A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university in Fire Protection Technology, Fire Science, Emergency Management, Public Safety or a related field is required.
A master's degree in Fire Protection Technology, Fire Science, Emergency Management or Public Safety is preferred.
Academic preparation must meet the requirements of SACS and any other specialized accrediting/certifying agencies.
Experience:
A minimum of five years professional experience in either Fire Protection or Emergency Management.
Must be proficient in and have experience with online teaching and course administration.
Experience with increasing responsibility for academic and instructional programs and at least two years of experience in teaching. Prior experience teaching in a Fire Protection Technology or Emergency Management program in the community college, college, or university level is preferred.
Experience developing academic student learning outcomes, program assessments and experience with Blackboard or other online learning management systems preferred.
Required North Carolina Firefighter I & II and Fire Instructor I certifications. Preferred North Carolina and Fire Instructor II, Fire Officer I and II certifications.
Required ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 and 800 course completion.
Experience with the administration of a FESHE recognized Fire Protection program preferred.
Knowledge of:
- Organizational and management practices as applied to the planning, analysis, and evaluation of division programs, policies, and operational needs.
- Principles and practices of budget preparation and administration.
- Principles, techniques and best practices of classroom instruction in the online environment. Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
- Advanced principles and practices of curriculum development and instructional strategies.
- Familiarity with current trends, research, and development in the areas of Fire Protection Technology and Emergency Management.
- Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations to include North Carolina Department of Insurance, NFPA, FEMA, NFA, and OSHA.
- FESHE requirements pertaining to associate degree programs.

Position Description
Advocate, direct, plan, coordinate, and teach in the Fire Protection Technology/Emergency Management curriculum programs.
Direct, plan, and participate in the instruction of classes for the Fire Protection Technology and Emergency Management degree curriculum program.
Develop, plan, implement, and administer the goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures regarding Fire Protection Technology degree and Emergency Management education; approve new or modified systems, policies, and procedures.
Understand, utilize, and ensure application of federal and state standards, to include North Carolina Department of Insurance, NFPA, FEMA, and OSHA to all academic training.
Ensure all FESHE recommendations are met and maintained.
Evaluate activities and operations of the academic division; evaluate and ensure that operations meet the goals and objectives of the college and the needs of the student population; establish and monitor program evaluation systems and procedures.
Coordinate and participate in the development and administration of the Fire Protection Technology and Emergency Management budgets; recommend funds for equipment, materials, and supplies, staffing needs; monitor and approve expenditures; implement midyear adjustments.
Approve payroll and faculty leave requests.
Work closely with Fire/Rescue continuing education (CE) programs.
The CE Fire/Rescue School Director will report directly to this position.
Select, train, mentor, and evaluate instructional personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with faculty to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination procedures as needed.
Oversee the development, implementation, maintenance, and review of curriculum, syllabi, special courses, and programs; ensure curriculum meets the needs of the program stakeholders.
Act as an instructor for classes within the assigned divisions; prepare comprehensive curriculum; select textbooks; prepare, proctor, and grade tests; prepare instructional materials and aids.
Coordinate the recruitment and retention of students; coordinate the development, review, and revision of program publications, publicity and other community relations activities.
Supervise the adherence of College policies.
Coordinate the selection, use, and maintenance of equipment and facilities assigned to the program.
Make presentations to outside agencies as a representative of the college; stay abreast of new developments in the assigned area of study.
Initiate and maintain agreements/contracts between the college and appropriate agencies.
Develop, review, and approve new program proposals.
Participate in college wide and program specific recruitment and retention activities.
Plan and participate in articulation activities with the public schools, colleges, and various community
agencies.
Perform other duties as assigned.
