OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY:

The Career Coach will support career and college pathways for high school students and adult learners entering post-secondary education. This position will cultivate programs and services so individuals can successfully enter and advance in a career path. The Career Coach will assist students in evaluating their abilities, interests, talents and personality characteristics in order to develop realistic academic and career goals by utilizing interviews, advising sessions, interest and aptitude assessment tests, and other methods.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and maintains partnerships with Craven County Schools, private schools, home schools, etc. and builds relationships with high school counselors and administrators to identify opportunities for growth and transitioning students
  • Develops and maintains partnerships with industry and community leaders and builds relationships with human resource managers, educational liaisons, etc. to identify training needs and opportunities for growth
  • Supports outreach efforts involving secondary school learners, area workforce partners, and community-based organizations to raise awareness of career opportunities and facilitate registration
  • Tracks prospective student interest by utilizing the college’s customer relations management (CRM) system
  • Coordinates events and information designed to promote awareness of career pathways for middle school and high school students, parents, and adult learners in the community
  • Follows a communication plan to ensure consistent communication with prospective students and community stake holders including high school faculty and staff, parents, workforce partners, local employers, community-based organizations, etc.
  • Visits area businesses and industries to discuss educational opportunities with employees and organizes college campus/industry tours
  • Assists with academic/career advising and college course registration for high school students
  • Maintains accurate and adequate student records to assist in academic/career advising and registration of high school learners
  • Provides information to college personnel regarding course needs for high school students
  • Responsible for knowledge of information related to High School, Community Colleges, Universities, Military Pathways policies and procedures as well as information related to community workforce development resources to provide students with timely information and guidance, assisting students in making informed decisions
  • Assists with Career Day and College Experience Day with the local high schools
  • Participates in new student orientations and recruitment activities for the College, along with middle school outreach
  • Meets with groups to acquaint them with the College’s services, higher education, and/or training opportunities  
  • Provides supportive interventions to help students succeed in high school/college courses; providing academic success strategies to facilitate successful transition, foster progression, and promote completion of credentials
  • Assists in communicating policy and procedure information to prospective students and parents
  • Conducts workshops and classroom visits (high school and college) to inform and instruct the students concerning Pathways or Crosswalk opportunities and requirements
  • Monitors compliance with local, state and federal regulations, accreditation standards and audits
  • Participates in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College’s mission, core values and goals

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

Two (2) years’ experience in secondary and/or post-secondary education.

Valid NC Drivers' license.

Preferred:
Experience within the North Carolina Community College System.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of college admission guidelines, standards and procedures
  • Knowledge of diagnostic tests used to assess preparation for college study
  • Knowledge of transfer requirements and articulation agreements
  • Knowledge of career planning principles and practices
  • Knowledge of college policies and procedures, academic requirements, campus resources, financial aid, student life and support services
  • Knowledge of federal, state and college requirements regarding FERPA and other applicable laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of community resources and community organizations

  • Demonstrates a high degree of initiative and independent judgment; uses discretion within current policies and procedures
  • Evaluating student’s academic interests and desires and formulating plans designed to assist the student in achieving their goals
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving and time management skills

  • Demonstrates proficiency in a variety of Windows-based computer programs relative to performing responsibilities, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
