Minimum Qualifications

Key qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or with at least seven years of progressive leadership experience in higher education.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Exceptional and demonstrated leadership skills, especially in the areas of visioning, communication, and culture change.
  • Adept communication skills; strong critical and reasoning skills; superior written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven track-record of implementing effective student success measures.

Must have the ability to:

  • Think entrepreneurially and act innovatively in an evolving educational and fiscal landscape.
  • Use data and statistics to make decisions related to academic offerings and student support.
  • Identify trends, foresee problems, and resolve conflicts.
  • Establish credibility in the community we serve, be decisive while appreciating and supporting the overall College priorities.
  • Acknowledge and encourage staff excellence and professional development related to College goals.
  • Understand and operate within rural, township, and ex-urban communities experiencing vastly different socioeconomic factors – especially generational poverty, the unique needs of adult learners, and the economic development opportunities currently available by virtue of the College’s location in the greater Triangle area.

Position Description

The Vice President of Learning, Student Engagement, and Success (LSES) has executive oversight and responsibility for developing, managing, and continuously improving the College’s for-credit academic, instructional, and student support areas. With the assistance of the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs, the VP leads the College’s “one front door” approach to admissions and student services.  Serving as both the Chief Academic Officer and Chief Student Services Officer, the VP of LSES reports to the President/CEO of the College on matters related to academics, instruction, and student support and as an essential participant on the Executive Leadership Team, President’s Cabinet, and other College committees as required.

 This position is assigned to the VGCC Main Campus in Henderson, NC, although, some travel to other counties in the college’s service area is expected. Consistent with VGCC’s Teleworking Policy, this position is eligible for up to 1 day per week of telework after the first 6 months of employment.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide leadership and focus by managing and developing faculty and staff to advance the College's mission, vision, and values in all responsible areas.
  • Recommends organizational structures, personnel, and resources to ensure a student/learner-centered environment at all levels.
  • Ensure academic programs, student services programs, and related policies comply with state and federal regulations, the US Department of Education, the NC Community College System, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, and other academic accrediting bodies, advising the President on matters related to College policies and strategic plans.
  • Recommends and implements policies, procedures, and practices which foster and promote learning throughout the College.  Maintain top-notch faculty and staff by managing performance, employee relations, and employee professional development.
  • Encourage faculty development, intradepartmental collaboration, and data-informed decision-making to support student success.
  • Plan, develop, and implement innovative instructional programs that reflect local and regional workforce needs.
  • Plan, develop, and implement student programs and services that implement the goals of the College; provides leadership for evaluating and ensuring quality in all aspects of the College’s student services, student development and enrollment management programs and staff.
  • Establish transitional programs for students through partnerships with other educational institutions including public schools and universities.
  • Lead and develop academic and student support services that foster student access, persistence, and completion.
  • Establish, through faculty, student-learning outcomes that prepare completers and graduates for university studies or the workforce. 
  • Maintain high standards of instructional delivery, ensuring the utilization of multiple methods and technology to serve the needs of community college students.
  • Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in the College; support the president in co-leading the college’s DEIB Council and shaping DEIB culture
  • Provides leadership for directing college-wide activities related to student due-process/judicial proceedings, including, but not limited to, writing appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Safeguard the integrity of the institution; provide fiscal responsibility and accountability for the Division’s assets and resources.
  • Maintain a positive, productive high profile within the community, including public and private educational institutions and business partners. 
  • Partner with Vice President of Workforce and Community Engagement (W&CE) to respond to the economic development needs of the region – including internal articulation between credit and short-term workforce programs and support for company recruitment.
  • Participate in NCCCS (North Carolina Community College System) academic and student services initiatives to encourage new opportunities for the College.
  • Provide other support and advisement to the President and the executive team as appropriately requested.

Physical Demands:

  • Light work that includes moving objects up to 30 pounds.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
