Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in education, human services, counseling, psychology, social work or an appropriate field is required. Minimum of five years of higher education experience and/or any equivalent combination of experience and education required to perform the duties as listed in the position description. Knowledge of the functions of the Division of Student Support and/or Academic Affair is mandatory. Experience serving as an advisor to a student club or organization in a higher education setting is a plus. 

The applicant will be expected to have supreme organizational skills, as well as strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills to match an unwavering ability to think critically and make decisions. Professionalism is necessary. The ability to receive, retain, and apply equitable practices in required. Candidates with a background of working, facilitating, and/or leading initiatives focused on holistic Black male development in higher education is a plus. The applicant must be knowledgeable of the most recent trends associated with the success of Black and minority males as well as variables to address negative attrition patterns. 

The applicant must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to perform repetitive tasks, and is able to use independent judgment in routine as well as occasional non-routine situations. Must have excellent computer skills and hold proficiency in all major Microsoft Office programs. The candidate must also be punctual and mature. The individual must have the ability to utilize social media to recruit, retain and attempt to ensure student success.

Preferred Qualifications

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including a computer, telephone, basic office equipment, vehicle, etc. Must be able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting much of the time, but involves walking and standing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, etc. for periods of time. Must be able to lift and /or carry weights of up to 50 pounds.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communications: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to volunteers and receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisor.

Language Ability: Requires ability to read a variety of policy and procedure manuals, regulations, reports, etc. Requires the ability to prepare reports, schedules, correspondence, etc. with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Requires the ability to make independent judgments in absence or supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information and to understand and implement basic office machinery functions.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions, to counsel and teach volunteers and inmates. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical and/or professional languages.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time.

Forms/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.

Motor Coordinator: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes using office machinery; and to drive motor vehicles.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.  

Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency, unusual or dangerous situations. The worker may be subject to danger or risk to a slight degree.

Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).

 

Position Description

Under the supervision and direction of the Assistant Vice President of Student Support, the Director of the Black and Minority Male Success Initiative is primarily responsible for supporting the mission of Pitt Community College, offering strategic direction in improving enrollment, academic success, persistence, and graduation rates of Black and minority males at Pitt Community College.The Director will provide administrative oversight, including resource development, and coordinating initiative-related support. The Director serves as a liaison, advocate, and educator concerning the unique needs, experiences, and challenges of Pitt Community College’s Black and minority males, serving as a crucial resource in their pursuit to achieve their educational goals.The Director will supervise three staff members, two full-time positions and one part-time position: Black Male Success High School Coordinator (full-time), Black Male Success Coach (full-time), and the Minority Male Success Initiative Coordinator (part-time).

1.  Provides leadership, guidance, mentoring, coaching, and programming for Black and minority males, while also serving as a resource for all male students from underrepresented backgrounds.

2. Responsible for program development, planning, and implementation, including establishing strategy, initiatives, goals, objectives, and assessment measures for the program.

3. Serves as a contact for the Pitt Community College - Pitt County Schools Black Male Success collaborative.

4. Assists with the development of a comprehensive minority male recruitment plan.

5. Uses predictive analytics to identify and track cohort of incoming at-risk students.

6. Consult with the Office of Planning and Research to develop longitudinal and track key performance indicators to improve performance outcomes and adjust as needed, collect, analyze, and report program data, and identify key performance indicators for establishing baseline data to monitor ongoing performance as initiatives are implemented for continuous improvement.

7. Develop end-of-semester and annual reports on activities, interventions, individual student and target group progress and outcomes, goals, and objectives.

8. Assist with providing relevant counseling/advocacy for students referred via Aviso or self-referral.

9. Offers support and guidance to ensure academic and social success while promoting cultural pluralism and dialogue on matters related to the development of Black and minority males.

10. Oversee the development, coordination and implementation of a comprehensive array of educational and cultural programming to promote the understanding, appreciation, and the success of Black and minority males.

11. Regularly meet with the Assistant Vice President of Student Support to review the program's status and present recommendations for resource needs, services, and activities enhancements.

12. Work with the Marketing Department to develop strategic and intentional marketing to support increased enrollment of and success of Black and minority males.

13. Identify and assist in writing grant proposals in support of the Black & Minority Male Success Initiative. Continually review and apply for external funding, and help steward donors who support the BMI program.

14. Develop, recommend, and implement academic support services to enhance student persistence and success.

15. Provide presentations on the Black & Minority Male Success Initiative and its impact on student success and performance/outcomes to various audiences (e.g., students, faculty/staff, trustees, external partners, etc.).

16. Coordinate research efforts in developing the program's mission and strategic plan.

17. Identify future goals and strategies to enhance student equity and achievement and integrate with other institutional planning.

18. Serves as Co-Advisor to the Level Up student club.

19. Serves as member of the Black & Minority Male Success Initiative Advisory Board.
