Minimum Qualifications

  1. Master’s Degree from an accredited institution (Counseling, Student Development, Social Work, Psychology, or related field), required

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, or Distance Credential Counselor, preferred
  2. Experience working with students and people with special needs, preferred
  3. Strong computer background, preferred

Position Description

 

In support of the overall Learning College, the Counselor and Student Advocacy Coordinator will assist in providing disability and, personal counseling services in a variety of settings for all students.

Responsibilities

  1. Assist students with disabilities to obtain classroom accommodations
  2. Develop, evaluate, and revise American with Disabilities Act (ADA) related policies and procedures for Isothermal Community College (ICC)
  3. Monitor regulations governing ADA programs and assist in educating faculty and staff of ADA guidelines, technical standards, and related issues
  4. Provide limited personal counseling to students to help them achieve personal goals and provide information to connect the students with community resources as appropriate. 
  5. Provide advising and registration assistance to students
  6. Provide early intervention assistance and follow-up activities
  7. Coordinate proctoring services for students with disabilities
  8. Work closely with special programs such as: Workforce Innovations and Opportunity Act (WIOA), Trade Act Agreement, Mental Health, and North Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Services (NCVRS) to provide opportunities and assistance to students in need
  9. Travel to conferences and workshops, as necessary
  10. Provide coordination of the ASSIST Program
  11. Other duties as assigned

Skills and Abilities

  1. Develop an understanding and appreciation of the mission, history, current programs, services and goals of Isothermal Community College
  2. Ability to expand knowledge of applicable laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the Americans with Disability Act which applies to student access to education and information
  3. Must establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others including those from diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds
  4. Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, faculty, and the public
  5. Strong organizational and time management skills
  6. Effectively maintain records and generate reports
  7. Willingness to learn new skills and perform a variety of responsibilities
  8. Possess an energetic, creative, and collaborative professional demeanor
