Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s degree in Building Construction Technology required or an Associate’s degree or higher degree in a related area and three to five years of teaching experience or work experience in residential construction; or any equivalent combination of teaching and work experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities. Applicant must possess ability for teaching detailed skills in BCT program and be able to instruct classes in all areas of building construction to include: framing, general carpentry, energy efficiency, sustainable building techniques and current “green” technology, cabinet making and finish carpentry; blueprint reading; construction estimating; North Carolina General Contractor’s License, OSHA 30 hour Safety Certification; and must be able to safely operate and instruct operation of woodworking tools, equipment and machinery; must possess a working knowledge of local, state, and national building codes.
Preferred Qualifications
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of types of office and audio-visual equipment including computer, audio-visual equipment, various saws, drafting equipment, carpentry tools, mechanic's tools, etc. Must be physically able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally and/or frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work; position requires walking, standing, stooping, reaching, crouching, fingering, climbing, etc. for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of approximately one hundred pounds.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes the giving of instructions to students and part-time substitute instructors. Includes the receiving of information and instructions from supervisor.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of documents, reports, and various books such as various manuals, PCC handbook and catalog, various texts, PCC FACT book, etc. Requires the ability to prepare various documents and reports such as lesson plans, grade/evaluation reports, attendance report, end-of quarter reports, book orders, long-range plans, etc., using the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar. Requires the ability to communicate with co-workers, supervisor, subordinates, other PCC personnel, etc. with poise, voice control, and confidence. Requires the ability to be conversant in the theory, principles, and methods of effective and persuasive speaking, voice and diction, phonetics, and discussion and debate.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems; to deal with nonverbal symbolism in its most difficult phases; to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables; to comprehend the most abstruse classes of concepts. Requires the ability to apply rational systems such as education (teaching), residential construction, etc., in order to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions. Must be able to instruct others via effective verbal communication.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers; determine percentages and decimals; determine time and weight; and apply algebraic and geometric principles.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in utilizing automated office equipment, construction equipment, etc.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, general construction equipment, etc. Must have high levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under moderate stress when confronted with an emergency.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)
Position Description
Under limited supervision, Instructs students in various residential construction classes and interacts with and assists students in various areas. Reports to the Department Chair, Building Construction Technology.
Performs various administrative duties in support of the Building Construction Technology Department including ordering equipment and supplies, maintaining equipment and supplies, preparing class syllabi, ordering books, presenting program information at career days, etc.
Instructs students in various residential construction classes such as carpentry, framing, cabinetmaking, etc. Duties include determining objectives; preparing lesson plans, course syllabi, handouts, tests, etc.; gathering resources for class; setting up for demonstrations; conducting class; conducting critiques; grading assignments; arranging for students to visit construction sites, scheduling guest speakers; etc. Prepares various reports related to classes including 10% reports, end-of-quarter reports, grade reports, rolls, etc.
Serves as general contractor for a special annual house-building project. Supervises and coordinates all work including architectural drafting, masonry, plumbing, electrical installation, air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration. Duties include designing, planning, scheduling, purchasing building supplies and materials, obtaining building permits and inspections from Building Inspector, answering questions regarding the house, etc.
Performs various student-related duties including recruiting students, advising students, assisting students with class registration, counseling with students, assisting students in locating jobs, etc. Completes various student forms such as withdrawals, registration, drop/add, and credit by examination.
Oversees and supervises the work of work/study students. Performs such supervisory duties as instructing; assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others; maintaining standards; and coordinating activities.
Remains active in professional organizations and activities. Keeps abreast of newest research in the teaching of residential construction courses by reading professional journals and attending seminars, conferences, meetings, etc.
Maintains good working relationships with all departments on campus.
Receives, reviews, processes, files and/or submits a variety of documents and reports such as requisitions, purchase orders, annual objectives, book orders, professional development reports, numerous schedules and forms, memos, and general letters of correspondence.
Operates, utilizes, and maintains various types of equipment, operate forklift, must maintain valid driver’s license (agrees to obtain North Carolina Driver’s License if hired) and supplies including audio-visual equipment, computer, various saws, lathe, jointer, shaper, carpentry tools, mechanic's tools, drafting instruments, measuring instruments, surveying tools, numerous construction supplies, and general office supplies, etc.
Serves on various campus committees, organizations, etc. Assists with special projects as required.
Responds to phone calls and emails, providing information and answering inquiries as appropriate.
Performs other duties as required.
