Minimum Qualifications
- Associates’s Degree in counseling, education, social work, student development, or related field
- Customer service skills sufficient to meet the VGCC Vanguard Vision commitment and service standards
- Knowledge of assessments, resources, services, and effective technologies to address student needs
- Ability to effectively communicate in written and oral form
- Training and/or experience in providing support services to individuals from traditionally underserved groups and must have a strong commitment to the value of education for all individuals
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, social work, student development, higher education leadership, administration or related field
Position Description
In accordance with the organizational chart and overall plan of Vance-Granville Community College, the Academic Advisor reports to the Director of Advising and College Success and is responsible for providing academic and student development guidance and coaching designed to support student learning and persistence. The Academic Advisor also tracks academic progress, assists students with the development of academic success, academic improvement and academic recovery plans, and coach students on strategies to balance academic and work/family issues.

Essential Duties:
- Assist students with accessing the registration portal and with course registration.
- Assist with career development modules and special workshops (e.g. choosing a major).
- Assist students in making career-related decisions using assessment instruments where appropriate; assist students in the use of existing resources for learning about careers of interest to them.
- Work collaboratively with faculty to connect the learning management system with supportive content and interactive services to enhance student learning and development outside the classroom.
- Attend curriculum divisional and/or departmental meetings.
- Provide appropriate referrals, using the early alert system, to the correct resource to address an issue of concern beyond the scope of the advisor.
- Use best practices and technologies to engage students to reduce attrition rates: individual or group meetings, emails, regroup alerts and mass notifications, special seminars or sessions, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Advising and College Success or Dean of Students, Equity, Retention, and Success.
- Assist our Hispanic/LatinX students navigate enrollment processes.
- Create informational brochures in Spanish.
- Build relationships and trust within the Hispanic/LatinX communities
- Identify the needs of Hispanic/LatinX students for holistic student services
