The North Carolina Community College System (System Office) is a statewide network of 58 public community colleges. The system enrolls over 500,000 students annually. It is the 3rd largest in the nation based on the number of colleges. It also provides data to the North Carolina Learning Object Repository by collecting, contributing, and sharing digital learning resources for use in traditional or distance learning environments. NC Community Colleges System Office has an opening for a Vice President of Economic Development in the Economic Development Division. The recruitment range: $155,000 – $166,557.

The Economic Development team provides education, training, and support services for new, expanding, and existing business and industry in all 100 North Carolina counties through our network of 58 community colleges. The mission of ApprenticeshipNC is to ensure North Carolina has an innovative, relevant, effective, and efficient workforce development system that develops adaptable, work ready, skilled talent to meet the current and future needs of workers and businesses to achieve and sustain economic prosperity.

Categories of Apprenticeships: There are many types of apprenticeships programs of various duration, level of required technical education, and level of employer investment.  Depending on their design, these programs may be more attractive to specific demographics, including an employer’s existing workforce, veterans, high school, or college students.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:  The Vice President of Economic Development leads, manages, and directs the operation of the Economic Development Division, Apprenticeship, Small Business Center network and Customized Training program with final approval authority for all projects. The position is responsible for budget and administrative management, policy development, dissemination, and implementation of economic development initiatives throughout the 58 community colleges. This position serves as the key contact for the System Office in communicating with Office of the Governor, NC Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, employers, non-profits, and local economic developers within the State.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/AND ABILITIES:

  • Be knowledgeable of the state’s economic landscape, economic development issues and opportunities. 
  • Be knowledgeable of applicable state statutes, NC Administrative Code, state guidelines concerning post-secondary educational programs, regulations and policies that govern business and industry in the State, and NCCC State Board Code.  
  • Possess leadership, managerial, and administrative capabilities.  
  • Possess an understanding of state budgets, allocations, and grants.  
  • Demonstrate initiative in development, organization, and maintenance of programs tailored to the needs of industry expansion and business sectors in the State. 
  • Ability to cultivate appropriate partnerships with employers, non-profit organizations, and government agencies to promote customized training and apprenticeship opportunities.  
  • Ability to utilize data to create viable programs that address workforce challenges and emerging needs. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to produce and deliver presentations. 
  • Ability to articulate assignments to subordinates and evaluate employee performance.
