Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Entrepreneurship, Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or related field and five or more years of successful business experience in an ownership or executive management capacity; OR an advanced degree in Entrepreneurship, Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or Law.

Experience:  

  • Demonstrated understanding of business management, startup, and resources and able to collaborate with local, state, federal, and private entities. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication, public speaking, interpersonal, and presentation skills and display initiative and demonstrate professionalism and able to manage multiple assignments, meet assigned metrics, and submit work promptly. 
  • Five years of Small Business Administration, Corporate America, industry, or entrepreneurship experience. 
  • At least two years of administrative and supervisory responsibility. 
  • A minimum of 3 years of progressive leadership experience in a business-related setting.  (Ex. Direct supervision, extensive project management or cross functional team leadership) is required. 
  • Experience counseling and/or consulting small business owners and experience with business planning and accounting software. 
  • Experience developing and administering business training courses, seminars, and/or webinars. 
  • Shall not have been in a principal office or owner for any business having filed bankruptcy within the past 7 years. 

Language 
 Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, grants, business correspondence, and class curricula. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, instructors, students, and the public.
Spanish speaking preferred.

Mathematical Skills 
 Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, ability to calculate decimals and percentages.

 Reasoning Ability 
 Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, teaching pedagogy, and leadership. Ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
 
 Computer Skills 
 A complete knowledge of Microsoft Products as used in overall management in an educational environment is required.

Position Description

SCC is seeking a dynamic, innovative, strategic, energetic and proven visionary leader to serve as its next Director of the SCC Small Business Center. The successful candidate will be extensively involved in the community, possess excellent leadership skills, strong verbal and written communication skills and have the ability to think strategically while working independently. This position reports to the Vice President of Workforce Continuing Education. The successful applicant will oversee the operational budget, submit accurate reports, and assist in other projects and duties as required within the Division of Workforce Continuing Education
 
 The objective of the Sandhills Community College Small Business Center (SBC) is to increase the success rate and the number of viable small businesses in Moore and Hoke Counties by providing high quality, readily accessible assistance to prospective and existing small business owners which will lead to job creation and retention. The Small Business Center (SBC) is a community-based provider of education and training, counseling, referral and information.
 
 At the core of its vision, the Small Business Center focuses on entrepreneurship, small business and economic development with an emphasis on assisting start-ups, early stage, and businesses seeking assistance to stabilize. Our unique structure allows ease of access and unparalleled knowledge and linkages within Moore and Hoke Counties. We collaborate with State and local entities to help business owners get the most current information needed to start and successfully operate their enterprises.
 
 Potential or existing small business owners can take advantage of:

  • Resources and referrals for a variety of business needs 
  • High-impact seminars, workshops and classes

 The Director of the Small Business Center (SBC) is responsible for the total operation of the Small Business Center. Responsibilities include assisting Moore and Hoke County citizens to begin new businesses and help existing small businesses thrive; identifying small business needs and then helping meet their needs; coordinating and implementing seminars and continuing education classes; expanding SBC activities; providing one-on-one assistance to small businesses; providing quality counseling; networking with business leaders, volunteers, advisory groups, and local, state, and federal agencies; and aggressively marketing the Small Business Center so the county citizens are aware of services offered. This position collaborates with external partners and College Staff to coordinate activities that support and promote entrepreneurship in Moore and Hoke Counties. 

 

Essential Functions

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide confidential one-on-one consultation to prospective and existing small business center owners in key areas such as business structure, business plan preparation, financial analysis, access to capital, and marketing.
  • Engage, foster, develop, and grow strategic partnerships and collaborations that enhance the college’s competencies, reputation, and economic impact with small businesses. 
  • Monitor small business trends and take initiative in starting new activities to keep the center current. 
  • Plan, schedule, and evaluate seminars and workshops to assure quality training is provided which builds skills of entrepreneurs and small business owners. 
  • Perform administrative tasks related to the management of the Small Business Center.
  • Promote the SBC program and advocate for small businesses through presentations to communities and entities. 
  • Develop relationships with key stakeholders supporting small businesses at the local and state level.
  • Serve on college, SBCN, and local committees as required. 
  • Attend SBCN professional development conferences, SBCN virtual events, and small business networking events. 
  • Maintain effective partnerships within the network of small business centers in the state and with local, state, federal, and educational agencies, and other service providers. 
  • In compliance with college policies and procedures, recruit, interview and hire/contract trainers and instructors for teaching and seminar presentations. 
  • In compliance with state and local college policies and procedures, prepare and monitor the Small Business Center operational budget. 
  • In compliance with state and local college policies and procedures, submit accurate records and reports on?small business center accomplishments. 
  • Work cooperatively within the College and externally in the college’s service area, contributing positively and constructively to the achievement of Small Business Center and College objectives. 
  • May teach classes, seminars, or workshops.
