Under the supervision of the Director of Security and Emergency Management, the Campus Security Officer is responsible for the security and safety of the College community, remaining alert to respond to emergency situations and providing first-line response and emergency management. This position is responsible for enforcing the College’s policies and procedures, and providing other security and safety related services. This position provides information, orientation, and escort services to the College community and its visitors. Incumbents in this position generally work alone on routine work assignments, checking in with the supervisor on non-routine assignments or when in doubt as to the correct procedure to follow.
This position will float between the New Bern Campus, the VOLT Center, and the Havelock Campus.
- Conducts routine security patrols on foot and by vehicle around buildings, parking lots, and campus grounds to prevent vandalism, theft, alcohol and drug use, breaking and entering, and to be alert to any weapon(s) that may be brought to campus
- Assists in medical emergencies, fire evacuations, tornado warnings, bomb threats, and exercise drills
- Monitors the campus via the video monitor system
- Locks and unlocks buildings, classrooms, and offices in support of class schedules, and supports contractor personnel via the access control system
- Activates emergency notification systems as necessary
- Communicates and escalates security incidents or related information in accordance with standard instructions and procedures
- Writes incident, medical, and other related security and safety reports as necessary and conducts interviews involving incidents that occur on campus
- Maintains daily log sheets on campus activities, provides briefing statements to oncoming officers
- Directs traffic during peak periods and special events, reserves parking spaces for various meetings and conferences
- Provides information, orientation, and escort services to the College community and its visitors
- Serves as a Campus Security Authority as outlined in the Clery Act
- Enforces the College Student Code of Conduct and investigates incidents when necessary
- Counsel students who violate College policies and procedures and refers them to the proper authority when necessary
- Participates in security training
- Participates in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned
- Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College’s mission, core values and goals
