Education Minimum:   High school diploma, general education degree (GED) or higher,  plus the completion of a certificate program or specialized training.

Experience Minimum:  Three (3)  to five (5) years of experience in a related field.

Other Qualifications 
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of how to work with landscape and farm equipment.  A North Carolina Pesticide License is preferred if not must obtain within the first year.

Position Description

Summary
Provides routine maintenance of all of the Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center, including the facilities, grounds, and equipment, and provides assistance and support for all of the Center's activities and programs with a focus on recreational activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
 

  • Assists with all hunting activities and events that occur on the property.
  • Mows all areas maintained as grass lawns including roadsides, campsites, and range facility.
  • Maintains roads and trails for safety and vehicle equipment.
  • Maintains campground facilities for year-round use.
  • Maintains building accessibility and appearance by picking up papers and trash from walkways and parking lots.
  • Assist with scheduling recreational activities and cabin rentals.
  • Assist with museum maintenance (may include feeding and or enclosure cleaning.)
  • Maintains and uses chain saw and other gas powered equipment, as well as farm equipment and related implements.
  • Assists and participates in educational programing and events as needed
  • Maintains wildlife management areas through mowing or controlled burning activities.
  • Supervises any volunteers assisting in operation related tasks
  • Uses pesticides on a regular basis in accordance with all stated label directions.
  • Performs general maintenance and repairs on all equipment.
  • Empties trash receptacles weekly or as needed into dumpster.
  • Performs general janitorial duties on a daily and weekly basis of all facilities   
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Language Skills    

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 
Mathematical Skills     

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

 
 Reasoning Ability                                                     

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions.  
  • Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables

Computer Skills                                            
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of order processing systems and word processing software.
