Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicant must hold a current unrestricted license or multi-state licensure privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution 
  • Have four years or the equivalent of full-time clinical experience as a Registered Nursing in an acute care hospital setting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing Education from an accredited institution
  • Experience teaching in an undergraduate nursing program

Position Description

The Nursing Success Coach role is designed to support nursing students and faculty in early identification, intervention, and remediation of potential obstacles that hinder academic progress to increase persistence, retention, and NCLEX performance. Primary responsibilities include tutoring students on difficult nursing concepts, assisting students in identifying good study skills and ways to decrease test anxiety, coaching students on how to prepare for a test and best practice in breaking down and answering test questions, preparing students for the NCLEX including guidance on the NCLEX test plan, assisting students with setting goals and monitoring progress. The Nursing Success Coach will serve as a liaison for the nursing department in helping guide students to appropriate campus resources (Single Stop, Counseling Services, Disabilities Services, Financial Aid, Scholarships, etc.).   

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists students with identification of academic, professional, and personal goals.
  2. Conducts comprehensive coaching, academic advising, and supplemental instruction.
  3. Assists students in developing an action plan to improve academic performance and/or to overcome potential obstacles.
  4. Monitors students’ academic progress and provides follow up.
  5. Assists students with identifying and resolving real or perceived barriers. 
  6. Serves as departmental expert on available campus resources and refer students as appropriate.
  7. Demonstrates active listening, compassion, ability to establish trust, personal connections, and thoughtful communication.
  8. Implements effective time management.
  9. Participates in college and departmental initiatives to increase retention, persistence, and NCLEX performance. 
  10. Collaborates with classroom faculty to foster and develop innovative partnerships. 
  11. Develops and presents lessons, workshops, or courses on career and/or college readiness and skills (ex. test taking strategies, NCLEX preparation, Reducing Test Anxiety).
  12. Tracks programmatic trends in academic performance. 
  13. Maintains confidentiality of student and faculty information.
  14. Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of their field or discipline.
  15. Stay current in their subject matter through professional development, involvement in professional organizations, and attending professional meetings, conferences, or workshops.
  16. Assist and attend Open House/Orientation/Graduation and Pinning.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.
