- A master’s degree in nursing from a regionally accredited institution, or a baccalaureate in nursing from an accredited institution and the ability to complete the graduate degree requirement within six (6) months of employment.
- Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina.
- Two calendar years of full-time clinical experience (or an equivalent amount of experience in part-time positions) as a registered nurse
- Work experience in the areas of medical-surgical, geriatrics, pediatrics, obstetrics, psychiatric, long-term care, mental health nursing and/or community/public health nursing.
- Completion of professional development activities within the past two years.
- Have education in teaching and learning principles for adult education, appropriate to faculty assignment at the college level.
- Willingness to participate in public school and university articulation, advisement, and recruitment programs of the College.
- Willingness to teach in the summer, day, evening, on Saturday, at unconventional times, or via distance learning (i.e., interactive TV, telecourse, Internet) as necessary.
- Willingness to travel to clinical sites in areas such as, but not limited to, Dillon, Elizabethtown, Loris, Lumberton, Whiteville and Wilmington.
- Willingness to meet North Carolina Board of Nursing requirement 21 NCAC 36.0318 (3), have preparation in teachimplementation, and evaluation, appropriate to assignment. This preparation may be demonstrated by one of the following:
- completion of 45 contact hours of continuing education courses;
- completion of a certificate program in nursing education;
- nine semester hours of education course work;
- national certification in nursing education; or
- documentation of successful completion of structured, individualized development activities of at least 45 contact hours approved by the Board. Criteria for approval include content in the faculty role within the curriculum implementation, objectives to be met and evaluated, review of strategies for identified student population and expectations of student and faculty performance;
- A master’s degree in nursing, nursing educational track, from a regionally accredited institution.
- Academic preparation in adult learning/patient education and/or teaching experience in a nursing Program.
- Experience with Datatel Colleague and/or WebAdvisor
- Ability to demonstrate the following: operating within standards of ethical behavior, commitment to life-long learning, college-level communication skills, critical thinking skills, global awareness, information literacy, community involvement, scientific and quantitative literacy.
Since quality instruction is the primary function of the college, it is the principal responsibility of each instructor to effectively and efficiently stimulate learning in every course. In addition, each faculty member should provide guidance to students through their role as an academic advisor and in more informal ways. Additionally, each faculty member is expected to participate in the governance of the college through committees and divisional meetings, through shared leadership within and across divisions, through personal recommendations to college administrators, and through participation in the Faculty Senate.
Nursing faculty may be assigned work in essentially all curriculum content areas. Major clinical areas which may be taught include maternity, medical-surgical, geriatrics, oncology, pediatrics, psychiatric and community/public health nursing. Responsibilities include classroom, campus lab and clinical site instruction as required in the assigned Associate Degree in Nursing, Practical Nursing, and Nursing Assistant courses. In some, but not all semesters, assignments will include teaching evening and/or weekend courses. Nursing faculty may also be required to teach classroom or clinical hours during the summer semester – a supplemental part-time contract will be used to compensate nine-month employees who are required to work these hours.
