Position Description
Statement of Primary Purpose
Provide instructional services to Opticianry students. Responsible for the oversight of the optical clinic and patient delivery
Classification
Curriculum faculty, part-time, exempt.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
• Prepare and teach assigned courses in accordance with course outlines and published course schedule.
• Oversee students through the steps of selling and dispensing spectacle glasses/double check student work
• Verify all measurements, patient information entered correctly
• Ensure all received glasses pass ANSI standards
• Instruct students on proper procedure in maintaining optical shop
• Maintain sales records and inventory
• Maintain accurate records for each course taught.
• Prepare, review, and update course outlines on a regular basis.
• Recommend and assist with curriculum revisions as necessary.
• Participate in curriculum advisory committee meetings, if applicable.
• Participate in college events and activities.
• Cooperate in scheduled student evaluations of instructor and course.
• Submit all college reports in an accurate timely fashion.
• Attend instructor and departmental meetings as scheduled.
• Be responsible for professional development and maintaining professional competence.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and others.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Associate’s Degree plus all credentials for which students are being prepared
Knowledge and Skills
- At least 3 years’ experience in the field of ophthalmic optics;
- Possess credentials for which the students are being prepared in the program, or hold comparable credentials that demonstrate at least equivalent training and preparation. (Optician, Optometrist, Ophthalmologist)
- Pursue ongoing formal training designed to maintain and upgrade his/her professional instruction and administrative capabilities.
Physical Demands
Must be able to demonstrate and use all equipment.
Physical requirements include walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling.
Licensing Requirement
Teaching faculty for spectacle dispensing must be certified by the American Board of Opticianry or equivalent (e.g. licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist) and licensed (where applicable) in North Carolina,
Teaching faculty for contact lens fitting must be certified by the National Contact Lens Examiners or equivalent (e.g. licensed optometrist or licensed ophthalmologist) and licensed (where applicable) in North Carolina.
Working Conditions and Environment
Classroom/lab environment, college campus.
Equipment Operation
Able to operate and demonstrate all equipment required to perform the duties of an optician.
