  • MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA accredited program in library or information science.
  • At least 2 years relevant experience, preferably in a community college or other academic library.
  • Familiarity with user experience testing and other assessment methods used in library and academic environments.
  • Proficiency with standard reference procedures and the use of online databases to conduct academic research.
  • Experience applying the ACRL Framework of Information Literacy to teaching environments, either online or in person.

The Outreach and Assessment Librarian is the primary Librarian for the Harnett campus library. They are responsible for developing and overseeing user experience testing and assessment projects, managing programming and multi-campus outreach efforts, and providing library instruction and reference services in person on the Harnett campus and multiple secondary site locations, as well as online utilizing a variety of technologies. This position leads the Library’s activities in user-centered design and user-experience assessment and utilizes the collected data to develop strategic outreach and programming for a diverse base of library users and stakeholders. In concert with other library staff, this position plans, implements, and evaluates in-person and online experiences that facilitate authentic engagement with the library and its collections, services, spaces, and expertise. This position assists with the collection development of physical materials for the Harnett campus and for e-resources in assigned areas. The librarian also provides circulation, reference, instruction, and other daily library assistance to patrons at the Harnett campus.

Essential Duties

 

User Experience (30%)

  • Consults with library stakeholders, including students and faculty, regarding user experience and usability issues and develops project plans in alignment with strategic plans of the library and the college as a whole.
  • Develops and implements user experience testing and assessments including but not limited to: usability testing of library systems, on-site observations, qualitative interviews and focus groups, card sorting activities relating to website information architecture, and moderating one-on-one and remote usability tests. 
  • Works with the Digital Resources Librarian, the Director of Library Services, and the Department of Institutional Effectiveness and Research to prepare data visualizations and analyze user experience data to identify key findings and opportunities.
  • Works with the Coordinator of Student Accessibility Services to assess, identify, and address accessibility needs of library patrons in the physical space and on the website.
  • Provides consultations, training, and professional development workshops to college faculty and staff relating to user experience and usability best practices. 
  • Works with the Director of Library Services, other library staff, and the college webmaster on the design and upkeep of the library web page to ensure site currency, user-focused design functionality, and WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards.

Programming and Outreach (30%)

  • Identifies needs and opportunities for library engagement with campus and community library users and potential users and develops outreach and marketing plans targeted at those groups.
  • Works with the Director of Library Services and the Programming and Outreach Assistant to plan, implement, and evaluate programs, projects, and initiatives that engage students, faculty, and wider community groups with library services and resources.
  • Maintains, with the help of the Digital Resources Librarian and the Programming and Outreach Assistant, a Library-wide social media presence and strategy that increases authentic and value-added engagement with the library and fosters the collegiate environment of the library’s virtual presence.

Instruction and Reference Services (20%)

  • Develops learning objects including interactive tutorials, research guides, and other instructional materials for online Psychology 150 classes and other courses as assigned. Embeds in online classes to provide point-of-need library help and instruction as requested by faculty.
  • Utilizes interactive teaching methods to provide in-person instructional sessions based on the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy to students on the Harnett campus and secondary sites located in Harnett and portions of Lee county.
  • Provides high-quality reference services to in-house library users on the Harnett campus and to online students via email, Blackboard Collaborate, and Chat Staff. Assists students, faculty, staff, and other patrons with use of the library catalog, print resources, electronic databases, and the Internet through individual instruction and/or research consultations. Assists students in the use of library equipment, computers, software, and other resources.
  • Provides roving library office hours at secondary college sites including, but not limited to the Harnett Health Sciences Center, the Dunn Center, and the Emergency Services Training Center on a schedule determined in conference with on-site library liaisons and the Director of Library Services.

Library Workflow (15%)

  • Works at the circulation desk at the Harnett campus.
  • Creates student photo IDs and manages technical aspects of ID software (BadgePass). 
  • Assists in managing study room reservations in the LibCal system.
  • Promotes and runs 3D printing services for Harnett county students and faculty. Trains other staff in the use of the 3D printer as needed. Provides upkeep and determines maintenance needs for the 3D printer.
  • Serves as liaison to the local IT department (Harnett campus) to manage general computer/technology issues. Submits work orders to the IT department for these issues.
  • Selects and deselects physical library materials on the Harnett campus. Assists with collection development of ebooks in assigned areas.
  • Oversees daily work of staff on the Harnett campus and develops unified plans for service, programs, or organization for the branch.
  • Opens the Library daily and oversees the general library study environment.
  • Provides assistance and support for library staff at other campuses as needed.

Other Duties (5%)

  • Serves on college committees as assigned.
  • Presents at professional conferences and engages with outside professional organizations.
  • Performs other library duties as assigned by the Director of Library Services.
  • May be assigned to work other hours and/or at other campus locations as needed.
