Education Minimum: Masters degree in Special Education, or Masters in Early Childhood Education or School-age Education/Elementary Education with coursework specific to Special Education.

Experience Minimum: Three (3) to five (5) years previous experience working with children with disabilities, young children and families and/or training that includes teaching or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred: Masters degree in Special Education or Early Childhood Education or School-age Education/Elementary Education or Middle Grades Education with coursework specific to Special Education.

Preferred: Three (3) to five (5) years previous experience working with children with disabilities, young children and families and/or training that includes teaching or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience, community college/higher education teaching experience; online teaching experience preferred.

Position Description

Summary

Under direction, the purpose of this position is to provide effective instruction which demonstrates adequate knowledge of the Special Education field for coursework in the Early Childhood Education and/or School-age Education programs and show evidence of careful planning and adherence to accreditation standards as well as course descriptions, program and course competencies/SLOs and requirements.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Prepares lesson plans, gathers materials and teaches classes.
  • Observes practicum students, prepares and grades tests, class projects and grades reports as appropriate.
  • Counsels and advises students as required.
  • Plans and/or participates in special events hosted by the Early Childhood Program (Ex. Week of the Young Child).
  • Attends and participates in college related functions as required such as orientations, program meetings, staff development activities, committees, workshops.
  • Assists in assessing needs and ordering materials and equipment for the program.
  • Collects and reports data on program accreditation key assessments and supportive assignments/activities related to specific courses being taught by instructor, as required.
  • Follows program policies and guidelines and national accreditation standards for EDU course instruction.
  • Utilizes laboratory child development center, as appropriate, within EDU course.
  • Serves on program advisory committee and/or provides program evaluation as required.
  • Serves as a resource and support to fellow full time and adjunct faculty.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities. 

Language Skills:  Requires the ability to utilize a variety of descriptive data and information, such as course textbooks, syllabi, accreditation data, professional resources, manuals, field legislation and rules/regulations.                  

 

Mathematical Skills:  Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as the ability to calculate decimals and percentages.                  

 

Reasoning Ability: Functional Reasoning:  Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, teaching pedagogy and leadership.  Ability to exercise independent judgement to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.  

 

Situational Reasoning:  Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the direction, control and planning of the programs.                  

 

Computer Skills:  A complete knowledge of Microsoft Products as used in an educational environment.  Ability to utilize course management systems such as blackboard, moodle, etc. preferred.                  

 

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to function in group settings with a diverse group of adults, primarily students and to collaborate closely with fellow colleagues.
