Minimum Qualifications

An AA degree in educational interpreting from an accredited program and a minimum of two (2) years experience in an educational setting or licensure from Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID), National Association for the Deaf (NAD) or Cued Speech Transliterator Training, Evaluation and Certification Unit (TEC Unit), and a minimum of two (2) years experience in an educational setting.

Position Description

Responsible for transliterating/interpreting in the classroom or at school-related activities for students who are deaf or hard of hearing with daily directions provided by the instructors; facilitating communication between the student and peers, and student and adults, in an educational environment;  providing feedback to instructors upon request, serving as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships within the educational environment, and possibly teaching beginning or intermediate sign language classes to students or staff.

Salary:  $30.00 per hour/10-15 hours per week.

Start Date:  August 1, 2021.

Closing Date:  July 25, 2021, or open until filled.

Supplemental Information

Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language; experience in ASL or ASL linguistics, deaf studies, deaf education, or sign language interpretation/translation; reading and writing proper English, required.  Study the content of lessons prior to class to ensure accurate representation of the lesson with a working knowledge of the subjects being interpreted.  Understanding deafness and its impact on language development.  Skill in expressive transliterating/interpreting at a rate commensurate with conversational speech and class lectures and adequate reverse interpreting/transliterating skill while maintaining the integrity of the message.

Transcripts or other official documentation supporting satisfaction of minimum educational requirement(s) are required.  Unofficial transcripts will be accepted for application purposes and may be submitted under separate cover if application is submitted electronically. The successful candidate must provide official transcripts at his or her own expense within thirty (30) calendar days of being notified of selection.
