Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
An Associate's Degree;
Knowledge of basic computer applications ( Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
Ability to work independently and with persons from diverse backgrounds is necessary;
Strong customer relations skills and relationship building skills.

Preferred Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree in education, counseling, human services, business administration, or a related field and/or equivalent combination of education and training;
Experience in academic advising and knowledge of student information systems;
Knowledge and thorough understanding of the mission of the community college especially as it related to enrollment and student support service functions.

Position Description

Description:

Under the supervision of the Community Education Coordinator, the Career Specialist will provide facilitation of the Community Education Center.  This position will assist students at the center with identifying long-term and shoirt-term goals and career aspirations.  Duties will include individual and group advising, career development; recruit students and promote the centers; and provide information on career opportunities available in the service area.

25%  FACILITATION OF THE COMMUNITY EDUCATION CENTER
Facilitate and organize activities at the center.
Assure project goals are met at the center.
Keep accurate and timely records and reports.
Attend relevant meetings and trainings.
Participate in on-going professional development activities
Develop and submit monthly reports
Facilitate the college's assessment process, program assessment and evaluation at the center
Contribute to the College's Quality Enhancement Plan

50%  SUPPORT STUDENTS
Provide individual and group advising, career development advising, and information on education opportunities offered at the center
Provide information on career opportunities available in the service area
Provide assistance completing job applications for students and community members
Provide and connect students with information on community resources to support students.
Facilitate and/or conduct academic enrichment workshops to include soft skills, study skills, test-taking skills, and time management.
Responsible for initiating and completing project activities for students at the center
Administer career assessment inventories to students.
Assist students in completing postsecondary education admissions applications and financial aid forms, and coaching for entrance exams.
Provide case management for participants enrolled at the center.
Provide follow-up wit students to endure they are taking full advantage of the services and making progress in classes offered at the center.
Collaborate with Halifax Community College's Academic Divisions to facilitate classes for students at the center.
Collaborate with Halifax Community College's Student Services Division to facilitate services at the center.
Collaborate with community resources to support students at the center.

20% PROMOTION AND RECRUITMENT FOR THE COMMUNITY EDUCATION CENTERS
Engage the community that center serves with the services, opportunities, and classes offered.
Identify and actively attend community events to promote the center.
Assist in the development of promotional material for the centers, including flyers, brochures, posters, and multi-media presentations.
Recruit students to participate in the services, opportunities, and classes offered at the center.
Maintain and update a participant recruitment base of applicants and provide monthly applicant follow up via phone call, visit, email, etc.
