Position Description

 

Police Officer

Department:Police and Public Safety

FLSA:Non-Exempt

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1.    Strong interpersonal skills, and effective oral and written communication/public relation skills;

2.    Knowledge of the NC General Statutes, individual rights, search and seizure, and the methods, procedures and practices used in investigation;  

3.    Proven ability to act quickly and intelligently in an emergency situation;

4.    Ability to carry out oral and written instructions;  

5.    Ability to perform general patrol (emergency response, medical, traffic and service)  duties;

6.    Understanding of crime prevention and community policing; 

7.    Ability to effectively use and maintain law enforcement equipment; 

8.    Ability to effectively perform telecommunications duties; 

9.    Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality; and

10. Understanding of the mission, goals, and objectives of a community college.

Essential Functions

This position is responsible for providing safety and security for members of the Durham Tech community.

This position is deemed an Essential Position therefore, personnel is considered Essential Employees. Essential personnel is defined as:

 Essential Personnel – Essential personnel are employees who, regardless of category, are necessary for operations during states of emergency. Essential personnel shall be notified in advance of their essential status via their job description or direct communication from their supervisor or division head. Employees who are considered essential employees include but are not limited to administrative officers, Campus Police and Public Safety officers, Facility Services personnel, and the Safety Compliance Officer.

1.    Patrol campus property to provide for the safety and welfare of students and employees and their belongings;

2.    Provide security to campus property including buildings, vehicles, equipment, and land;

3.    Enforce state and federal laws, local ordinances, and college rules and regulations pertaining to students, employees, and visitors while on College property;

4.    Detect and deter crimes, respond to complaints, recognize situations quickly and objectively and determine the appropriate actions when assigned; 

5.    Enforce traffic laws, assist motorists, direct traffic flows when needed, investigate traffic crashes; 

6.    Respond to critical incidents utilizing appropriate gear and training.

7.    Respond with emergency personnel, and/or college personnel in assisting with directing persons to safety, evacuation(s) of buildings, and rescue of injured persons;  

8.    Respond to emergency medical situations and administer first aid within the scope of his/her training;

9.    Perform initial investigations and follow up investigations into criminal activity; 

10. Testify in the court of law as to findings in criminal investigations;

11. Prepare written reports and incident reports relating to criminal incidents, security, and safety matters.

12. Serve as the single point of contact for campus incidents that occur during a shift, in the absence of a higher-ranking campus authority;

13. Continuously monitor campus buildings and grounds for fire, safety hazards, maintenance problems, and areas where needed patrols are warranted. Report all problems to the supervisor or authorized personnel to ensure problems are logged and corrected;

14. Protect the confidentiality of information acquired through performance of duty;

15. Report to work during scheduled & unscheduled shifts, college events, and closings as requested by the Chief or their designee (classified as essential personnel); 

16. Additional duties shall include other appropriate activities as assigned by the Chief of Staff and/or the President.

•Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time; 
•Moderate physical labor may be required on occasion;

•Capable of walking up and down flights of stairs and walking for extended periods of time; 
•Ability to lift, at times, 50+ lbs.
