Position Description

Job Title:   Police Officer

Reports to:  Director of Campus Police & Public Safety

Duties and Responsibilities:  To provide for the safety and welfare of students, faculty, and staff on the Durham Technical Community College Campuses.  Patrols college property to deter crime and identify violations or potential hazards.  Protects life and property of the college community, detects and arrests offenders, and enforces all laws, ordinances, and college policies.

More specifically, the duties and responsibilities are as follows:

  1. Patrol campus property to provide for the safety and welfare of students, faculty, staff and their belongings;
  2. Provide security to campus property including buildings, vehicles, equipment and land;
  3. Enforce state and federal laws, local ordinances, and college rules and regulations pertaining to students, faculty, staff and visitors while on College property;
  4. Prepare written reports such as daily logs and incident reports relating to criminal incidents, security and safety matters;
  5. Serve and assist students, faculty and staff whenever practicable to provide for their safety and welfare;

Additional duties shall include other appropriate activities as assigned by the appropriate Division Head and/or the President.

Required Minimum Qualifications:   High school diploma or G.E.D; some college preferred.  Valid NC Driver’s License.   Must be at least 21 years of age.  A working knowledge of the laws relating to the rights of suspects, search and seizure, and the methods, procedures and practices used in investigation is essential.  A proven ability to act quickly and intelligently in an emergency situation is necessary.  Must have the ability to carry out oral and written instructions.  A thorough background, character investigation and reference check will be made before appointment.  Drug testing required of all finalists and psychological and medical exam required after conditional offer of employment. One year experience in law enforcement or security profession.  NC police certification; BLET certification or lateral transfer preferred. Hold current CPR/AED and basic first aid certification, or be able to obtain certification within three months of employment.

Other Requirements:  Must have a clean criminal history and no DUI.  Moderate physical labor may be required on occasion and working outside in adverse weather conditions is common.  Must be capable of walking up and down flights of stairs and walking for extended periods of time.  Must be able to work variable hours, including weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.
