Blue Ridge Community College is currently seeking applications for a full time Police Officer. As a central part of the College community, the primary function is to provide an environment that allows students, staff, faculty and visitors to interact in safe and secure surroundings. The role is to actively support the educational activities of the college through safety, security and law enforcement services. These services will meet the highest level of approval and the candidate will constantly strive to anticipate the needs of the College community. This is done through offering crime prevention programs to promote safety and deter criminal activity. Officers will conduct various law enforcement activities including patrolling within the geographic jurisdiction, conducting criminal investigations, crime prevention, conducting traffic accident investigations, assisting motorists, parking/traffic control and providing security at special events.
Education:
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Must have completed NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET)
Must possess NC General Law Enforcement Certification
Experience:
1 year of experience with a NC law enforcement agency
Must be 21 year of age
Preferred Qualifications:
A.A.S Degree
Training in EMS
Experience as a School Resource Officer
Knowledge and Skills:
• Must possess knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures, as well as strong analytical, leadership, and administrative skills
• Excellent oral and written communications skills and ability to comprehend and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, associates and the general public.
• Skilled in problem-solving and considerable knowledge in traditional law enforcement principles, along with a broad range of public service matters.
• Ability to deal professionally, courteously, and fairly with the public.
• Proficient in the use of firearms and operations of police vehicles;
• Able to apply skills to make the right decisions based not only on the law, but the intent of the law as it related to our mission and goals, both short- and long-term. Knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures.
• Possess strong personal and professional integrity, effective verbal and written communication skills, and a commitment to safety and community policing.
• Must be computer literate with ability to use Microsoft Word, report management systems, criminal information databases and email.
Physical Demands:
The ability to perform all duties associated with the position including, but not limited to lifting, prolonged standing, walking, running, sitting, bending, stooping, and operating or performing work with associated tools and machines.
Must pass a comprehensive background investigation.
