Minimum Qualifications

  • A Masters Degree in a helping profession field from a regionally accredited college or university. 
  • Least one year experience in the helping professions
  • Least one year experience in college-level teaching or adult education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification by the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board or at least two years’ experience in Gerontology. 
  • Post-secondary teaching experience.
  • Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Experience with the completion of a self-study and interim report for the CSHSE.
  • Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems.
  • Experience providing clinical supervision.

Position Description

In accordance with the organizational chart and overall plan of Vance-Granville Community College, the Program Head of Human Services position is designated to participate in and supervise the design, planning, organization, and continuous evaluation of the program/faculty. This leadership role is responsible for ensuring the success of the Human Services Program.

Essential Duties:

  • Assist in the design of the organization structure and coordinates all instructional activities within the program to include but not limited to:
    • Developing core course syllabi and ongoing maintenance to ensure that syllabi are current and forwarded to the Academic Dean for approval and posting to the department’s network folder and Adjunct Faculty Portal.
    • Developing of course evaluations and using the data to improve outcomes.
    • Preparing semester class schedules in collaboration with all constituents served.
    • Selecting and requisitioning of textbooks and related materials for all campuses.
    • Preparing and administering of program budget.
    • Requisitioning and accounting for supplies, materials, equipment and repairs to equipment used by the program at all campuses in collaboration Academic Dean.
    • Maintaining appropriate records on students and faculty supervised.
    • Making recommendations to the Academic Dean concerning the development and expansion of courses and/or the program to meet market demands.
    • Recommending new textbooks, magazines, materials and equipment for use in the LRC when requested by the Director of the LRC.
    • Encouraging and supporting innovative teaching techniques among program faculty.
  • Facilitates program enrollment growth, retention, and completion.
  • Ensure equitable student outcomes.
  • Coordinates and participates in activities with Student Access & Support in the recruitment, screening and selection of students for the academic program.
  • Assists in the selection, orientation, and supervision of new full-time and part-time faculty at all campus locations.
  • Maintains frequent contact with part-time instructors.
  • Regularly engages as a member of assigned institutional committees.
  • Maintains assigned teaching responsibilities.
  • Coordinates, develops, and assesses Program Outcomes and Student Learning Outcomes and uses these results to make program improvements.
  • Serves as an advisor to students and provides a minimum of five posted office hours per week for student related matters.
  • Provides adequate coverage of scheduled classes in the absence of assigned instructors.
  • Maintains a cooperative relationship with appropriate individuals and agencies outside of the College.
  • Completes appropriate faculty and staff evaluations.
  • Ensures program advisory committee meets annually and that minutes are recorded and submitted to the Academic Dean for approval. Then send to the advisory committee lead and Vice President of Learning, Student Engagement & Success for posting.  
  • Engages in relevant professional development.
  • Engages in the community to help promote the Human Services Program.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in technology required by academic program area and in administrative processes as required by the college.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by the Academic Dean or Vice President of Learning, Student Engagement & Success.
