Position Description

Summary
The Coordinator position will oversee the daily operations of the academic support services areas, which includes tutorial services, and is primarily responsible for managing staff, services and operations. As Coordinator, this employee is responsible for developing and fostering an environment that supports student success, using both people and technology in tandem.  The Coordinator position is also accountable for assisting the Department Chair, Academic Enrichment Services and Developmental Studies as needed, in meeting the instructional and curricular requirements of the program and department.  Under general supervision, the Coordinator of Academic Support Services will specifically be responsible for the following duties:

 

Knowledge & Responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create an effective learning environment by planning, organizing, facilitating, and evaluating  quality academic support programs and services
  • Assist the department chair in identifying hiring needs and in the recruiting, training, and evaluation of Academic Skills Center personnel
  • Serve as students' first contact when seeking academic support and to assess and prescribe appropriate tutorial services based on one-on-one confidential interviews with these students
  • Use departmental software to schedule appointments and assign tutors
  • Complete and maintain required confidential documentation of  tutorial services for FTE generation, quality assurance, and continuous improvement
  • Maintain daily staffing to ensure both immediate and scheduled tutorial services and student attendance, as well as make contact with Academic Skills Center personnel and students to apprise of any schedule changes
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administration, and the students of other colleges and universities to ensure the success of students
  • Assist in the promotion of the Academic Skills Center's services to both prospective and current students and faculty/staff
  • Select and maintain instructional materials and supplies
  • Assist in implementing procedures and processes for testing in the Academic Skills Center including, but not limited to, the following:  schedule testing, proctor testing, score tests, assess for remediation, and report confidential scores to designated program directors
  • Manage the Center's technology needs
  • Coordinate and monitor online tutoring services
  • Serve as tutor and workshop facilitator as it relates to his or her academic discipline and benefits the students who visit the Academic Skills Center
  • Prepare required reports
  • Communicate effectively with adult learners and maintain good relationships with faculty/staff and students
  • Attend workshops and other trainings as directed by the FSAS dean and/or department chair
  • Exercise individual initiative, independent actions, and sound judgment
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service and excellent interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to function in a supervisory/managerial capacity for a group of workers. 
  • Ability to make decisions on procedural and technical levels.
  • Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the direction, control and planning of the programs.
  • Ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, teaching pedagogy, and leadership. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Ability to perform basic math computations including adding, subtracting, multiplying and averaging all units of measure.

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient in a Windows environment and have knowledge of email systems, PowerPoint, Blackboard and online lab environments.

Language Skills                                            
Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information, such as policy manuals, Employee Handbook, SACS Criteria Manual, program guidelines from the NCCCS, course syllabi and course textbooks.
 
Mathematical Skills                                     
Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, ability to calculate decimals and percentages.
