Licensure/Certification:

  • Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) or Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS)

Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the field of healthcare overall, and behavioral health/substance abuse specifically.

Position Description

DEFINITION:To provide classroom and/or online instruction to students enrolled in the Substance Abuse Counseling class provided through Continuing Education.
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Receives direct supervision and/or technical direction from the E&WD Workforce Training Coordinator
  • May occasionally receive general supervision from full-time instructional staff
  • Exercises no supervision

 

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

 
ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENT:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
 

  • Provide classroom and/or on-line instruction to students. Classes typically meet 2-3 times per week day or evening. Time for each class is 3 to 3 ½ hrs. 
  • Prepare course syllabus in accordance with the NC Combined Course Library, lesson plans and schedule classroom activities. Modify as needed.
  • Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities
  • Participate in curriculum development, evaluation and changes as needed
  • Develop and prepare supplement materials to enhance textbook lessons
  • Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade record individual scores
  • Provide classroom demonstrations on various equipment and machinery; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance
  • Maintain and submit all required paperwork in a neat, accurate and timely fashion, including but not limited to: class rosters, registration forms, pay sheets, attendance forms and grade rosters
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area and in accordance with CFCC policies and guidelines

 
Other Important Functions:

  • Assess the relevance and impact of various lessons and recommend improvements as needed
  • May be asked to provide coverage for other Instructors on an as needed basis
  • Participate in student related activities associated with completion of the program
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

 

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Knowledge of:
 

  • Professional skills, knowledge and attributes within the Substance Use Disorder  field. These include, but are not limited to: criteria for CADC certification; curriculum requirements for the 270 hours of didactic component of the certification process; private and public agency employment requirements; teaching to a diverse student base, etc.  
  • Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures
  • Principles and procedures of academic and instructional techniques and procedures
  • Current trends, research and development in the area of assignment
  • Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration

 
Ability To:

  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Interpret and apply College goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Classes may be held downtown, North Campus or Surf City Center.   Typically the class meets in the evenings.

  • Successful candidates are required to submit official transcripts for all degrees obtained, within 30 days of hire date. If highest level of education is a High School diploma or equivalent, proof of completion is required.

 

  • Successful candidates who have obtained their education outside of the US and its territories must have their academic degree(s) validated, at their own expense, by an outside credential evaluation service as equivalent to the Baccalaureate or Master’s degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university in the United States.

 

  • This is a temporary part time contracted position and does not offer benefits other than voluntary participation in a 403B or 457 Retirement plan, for which no employer match is offered. Additionally, part time positions do not accrue vacation or sick leave, and do not accrue hours towards state service.
