Position Description

This position is a professional level position through which the Small Business Center's counseling, training and technical assistance services are provided to small business owners, would-be entrepreneurs and to individuals and firms developing new products, technologies or markets.  This position is expected to provide a broad range of business advice and in-depth assistance to a sizeable number of clients in Pitt County. Reports to the Small Business Center Director/Director of Entrepreneurship.

The Small Business Counselor is responsible for client counseling.  This responsibility includes direct client contact in one-on-one meetings and through telephone, e-mail, and written communication.  It also includes the very substantial time which must be committed to adequately research, prepare materials and recommend courses of action to clients who are counseled.  Much of the work is technically-based and requires attention to detail.  The person filling this position must exercise great care and discretion in assisting the Small Business Center's clients.  Absolute confidentiality of client information must be preserved.
 
Both the Small Business Center and its clients will be directly affected by the quality of service provided through this position.  Errors or failure to exercise care in advising clients could cause irreparable harm.  Specific duties include:

  • Meeting with clients to determine their needs and abilities
  • Undertaking research and developing materials necessary and appropriate to meet the needs of the clients.
  • Providing advice and technical assistance as needed.

 
The person filling this position is responsible for the maintenance of confidential client records and for periodic reporting on program performance.  Specific duties include:

  • Maintaining adequate records of client-related activities
  • Providing reports on client counseling
  • Assisting in the preparation of other reports and in carrying out other administrative duties as assigned.

 
Receives, reviews, processes, submits and/or files a variety of documents and reports, NC Small Business Center Network reports, and other required reports as needed.
 
Operates and maintains a variety of standard office machines and equipment including computer, copier, calculator, etc.
