Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education/Training:

  • High School diploma or GED/High School Equivalency

Minimum Experience

  • At least three years of experience in managing a cafeteria, restaurant or catering service. 
  • Successful management or supervision experience
  • Knowledge of food and nutrition trends
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel and office skills
  • Knowledge of proper operation of commercial equipment in a kitchen setting
  • Must hold a valid North Carolina Driver’s License and have a clean driving record

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:

  • Associate degree from an accredited institution in culinary, hospitality or related field.
  • ServSafe certification
  • Experience in education food setting
  • Coursework or training in basic business or accounting principles

Position Description

DEFINITION:

This part-time position will gather program food needs of Career Academy participants and staff, plan snack and lunch menus (food and beverage) focused on middle school preferences and nutrition, gather quotes from catering/food service companies, order food needed, plan for staff to assist, organize food shipments/deliveries and safe storage, prepare and distribute to students and staff.  Ensure student and staff satisfaction and work within a budget.   

 

Career Academy is a 4 week summer program for middle schoolers from New Hanover and Pender Counties.  Students explore between 15-25 career paths at CFCC’s North and Downtown campuses.  Students are on campus from 8:30am-3pm, M-Th and Fridays from 8:30am-12pm.  

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Receives administrative supervision from the Associate VP of Economic and Workforce Development and Career Liaison Floater.
  • Supervises kitchen volunteers or workers.

 

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

 

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

Essential Functions:

  • Gather customer/student/staff requirements (like numbers and dates).
  • Plan and organize food and beverage menus considering the requirements and budget.
  • Determine catering companies and required food/ingredients for portions.
  • Develop a staff/volunteer shift schedule for snack and lunches.
  • Oversee food prep and customer service and maintain health and safety standards.
  • Keep track of expenses
  • Manage inventory and place orders as needed
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Prepare a final report detailing expenses and suggested improvements.

 

Other Important Functions:

  • Work with the Career Academy staff to plan.
  • Provide excellent customer service to students, colleagues, and others.
  • Evaluate and adjust snacks and meals served; adjust menu to address shortfalls or items that were not popular.
  • Keep Career Academy staff informed of daily plans and meals/snacks.
  • Ability to remain calm and make quick decisions under stressful circumstances

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Knowledge of:

 

  • Relevant computer programs and systems
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping
  • Basic principles of business letter writing and report preparation
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
  • Budgeting principals

 

Ability To:

  • Plan, organize and implement food service for up to 250 children and adults.
  • Perform responsible and difficult administrative work involving the use of independent judgment and personal initiative
  • Cultivate and maintain professional collaborations and relationships with business and industry and other stakeholders. 
  • Perform advanced MS Office and Google Drive functions in Word, Excel
  • Use social media for marketing and/or promoting courses being offered
  • Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations
  • Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and  regulations
  • Communicate clearly, and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

  • This position requires day time work at CFCC’s North Campus and downtown campuses.
     
  • Position will most likely begin towards the end of May 2023 and end Aug. 4th.  During the Career Academies, the position will work 32-40 hours per week (July 10th-Aug. 4th).  During May and June, hours will most likely vary but estimated 5-20.
