Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in chemistry or related field with at least 18 graduate hours in chemistry. Eligible candidates for the in-person position must be available to teach on HCC’s main campus. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

A Master’s degree in chemistry. Teaching experience at the post-secondary level. Familiarity with Moodle or other learning management systems. Experience working with a diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, ability, and ethnic background of students. Preference will also be given to candidates who may be available for in-person instruction in future semesters.

Position Description

The instructor will teach face-to-face General Chemistry I (CHM 151) classes. Ideal candidates will be available to teach face-to-face sections on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the fall 2024 semester. Duties are primarily instructional, with efforts that promote and enhance the college's commitment to excellence in instruction and support the current needs of the students and other faculty. Instructors are responsible to a dean and/or program manager. The relationship of the instructor to the student is one of leader, teacher, and facilitator of learning.

This position is for in-person courses for fall semester, beginning August 19, 2024.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

 

The instructor will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Generates updated course syllabi at the beginning of the semester that provide students with a list of course requirements, necessary texts/supplies, a summary of course content and subject competencies to be covered, and evaluation methods to be utilized. 
  • Prepares course materials. 
  • Uses appropriate teaching techniques including delivering lectures, leading discussions, and conducting demonstrations/exercises. 
  • Conducts evaluations of student performance and assigns grades based on those evaluations. 
  • Maintains and submits records of student attendance and grades on time, and in accordance with College procedure. 
  • Responsible for administering student surveys in classes as prescribed by College procedure and for discussing the results of surveys with his/her supervisor. 
  • Supports and encourages college-sponsored activities. 
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required to meet course objectives.

 

Additional responsibilities:

  • Maintain updated course syllabi and provide each student with a written statement of course requirements at the beginning of the semester including texts, course content and competencies and evaluation. 
  • Prepare course materials; use appropriate teaching techniques including delivering lectures, leading discussions and conducting laboratory demonstrations; and perform other activities, which are related to and meet the requirements of the courses. 
  • Conduct evaluations of student performance and assign grades on the basis of such evaluations. 
  • Maintain records of student attendance and grades according to college and state policy and procedure. 
  • Responsible for the development and revision of course content, textbook/equipment selection, instructional materials and teaching assignments/scheduling. 
  • Responsible for administering student surveys in classes as prescribed by College procedure and discussing results with Dean or Program Manager.
  • Maintain professional skills and subject expertise through continual study and research in discipline and through involvement in professional organizations. 
  • Support and encourage college-sponsored activities.
  • Create a student-centered environment 
  • Implement innovative strategies to meet the needs of students and improve processes
  • Interact with co-workers and perform tasks with the highest level of integrity
  • Work cooperatively with faculty, staff, students, and our learning community
  • Promote and support HCC’s mission, vision, and values and promote and support coworkers in the most positive manner.
