Position Description

Summary 
With little direct supervision, frequently at "satellite" locations, provides classroom instruction and assistance to defendants who are court-ordered to complete National Safety Council defensive driving courses. Ensures that course materials, teaching aids, and necessary classroom equipment are on hand to conduct assigned classes at assigned locations. Performs routine clerical tasks related to the administration of assigned classes.

 

Knowledge & Responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Instructs participants regarding safety rules and regulations governing North Carolina Safety & Health Council defensive driving courses ensuring course materials, teaching aids are used properly and as required.
  • Performs routine clerical tasks related to the administration of assigned classes including attendance and course completion documentation.
  • Generate and distribute "certificates of completion" to course participants, and deliver these and other documents to the Alternative Sentencing and Release or Court Clerk's Office as may be required.
  • Ability to demonstrate competence in areas expected to teach
  • Ability to plan, organize and deploy quality college level instruction
  • Ability to communicate effectively with adult learners and to maintain good relationships with staff and students.
  • Frequently communicate in-person and telephone.
  • Be able to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Mathematical Skills   

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. 

                                          
Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.                                                

 
Computer Skills     
To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel.
       
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Certification by the North Carolina Safety & Health Council as a DDC Instructor for assigned classes, or willingness/ability to obtain certification is required (North Carolina Safety & Health Council will cover all certification costs.).
  • Must have a valid driver's license

  • Must maintain a good driving record with the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
