Minimum Qualifications

Minimum & Preferred Qualifications:

Education Minimum:  Master's degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development with a minimum of 18 master level early childhood (birth-kindergarten) education focused semester credits. Must provide unofficial transcript with application to be considered.)
Education Preferred:  Master's degree in Early Childhood Education with a minimum of 18 master level early childhood (birth-kindergarten) education focused semester credits and coursework in community college teaching/adult education. Proof of any train the trainer for BSAC, ITS SIDS, and/or Playground Safety.

Experience Minimum:  Two (2) or more year's previous verifiable experience working with young children and families and minimum of 1 year experience in mentoring/teaching/training of adults to work with young children.
Experience Preferred:  Three (3) to five (5) years previous verifiable experience working with young children and families, one (1) or more years as an administrator/director of an early childhood program, and minimum of 1 year experience in teaching/training of adult to work with young children, and one (1) year teaching in higher education. Able to speak and read Spanish fluently.

Position Description

Under direction, the purpose of this position is to provide effective instruction which demonstrates adequate knowledge of the Early Childhood Education field and shows evidence of careful planning and adherence to accreditation standards as well as course descriptions, program and course competencies and requirements. 


Knowledge & Responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Prepares and follows course outline/plans, gathers materials before class, prepared and ready to begin class on time. Develops a comprehensive instructional sequence for each class.
  • Engages students in learning and the instructional strategies used to help students gain better insight into the subject matter
  • Creates and implements a physical and interpersonal classroom environment that is respectful and supportive of student learning and various ability levels.
  • Demonstrates extensive content knowledge and engages the learner in construction of learning within the discipline and subject matter being taught.
  • Observes students, prepares and grades tests, class projects and grades reports in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a variety of records and reports including up to date test files and curricular plans. 
  • Submits college reports, including but not limited to attendance, grades and distance learning reports each semester and accreditation data reports as requested by the required deadlines.
  • Collects and reports data on program accreditation key assessments and supportive assignments /activities related to specific courses being taught by instructor.
  • Remains current with early care and education trends and policies in courses.
  • Utilizes laboratory child development center, as appropriate, within EDU course.
  • Counsels and advises students as required.
  • Serves on program advisory committee and/or provides program evaluation as required.
  • Recruits and fosters retention of students.
  • Serves as a resource and support to colleagues, JCC Child Development Center staff and students.
  • Attends and participates in college related functions as required such as, but not limited to orientations, program meetings, staff development activities, committees, workshops, graduation ceremony.
  • Assists in assessing needs and purchasing requests for materials and equipment for the Early Childhood Program as needed in a timely manner.
  • Follows program policies and guidelines and national accreditation standards for EDU course instruction.
  • Ability to function in group settings with a diverse group of adults, primarily students and to collaborate closely with fellow colleagues.
  • Ability to exercise confidentiality, honesty, and consistent and sound judgments regarding the care of children, families, colleagues and adult college students.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Language Skills                                             

  • Able to utilize a variety of descriptive data and information, such as course textbooks, course syllabi, accreditation data, professional resources, college policies and employee handbook, field legislation, rules and regulations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. 
  • Ability to write simple correspondence. 
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of data such as NC Child Care rules and regulations, accreditation guidelines, sanitation requirements, etc.
  • Quality oral and written communication skills for modeling for children as well as communicating with outside agencies, students and families.
  • Preferred bi-lingual (English & Spanish)

Mathematical Skills                                                  

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 
  • Ability to calculate decimals and percentages.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability    

  • Ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, teaching pedagogy and leadership.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity required of situations involving the direction, implementation and planning of the classroom environment and activities and use a variety of behavior guidance strategies.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. 
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.

Computer Skills

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Products as used in an educational environment
  • Ability to utilize course management systems such as Blackboard, Moodle and Taskstream (experience preferred)
  • Ability to research on the internet and attaching documents
  • Ability to operate children's electronic educational tools such as Smart Tables, computers, learning aids, and other similar electronic media
  • Ability to operate additional office equipment such as fax, copier, and printer.

Physical Demands

  • Ability speak and hear (with or without assistive devices)
  • Ability to be mobile including standing for potentially long periods of time, walking, kneeling, crouching, stoop, reaching, crawling, getting up and down from the floor level, etc.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 35 pounds
  • This position is physically active and demanding and requires proper balance and fitness.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Employee must be able to obtain physician approval for physical and mental health upon employment and thereafter as needed or required.
