Education Minimum:   Must have completed or be actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Education, Education, Environmental Sciences, Natural Recourses, or a related field from an accredited institution.   

Experience Minimum:   Twelve core credit hours with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Position Description

Summary

Develops and conducts environmental education programs for various groups. Coordinates nature activities and routinely updates environmental education displays. Provides daily care for reptile and amphibian displays and birds of prey.  

Period:  Mid-June through Mid-August (3-week minimum / 7-week maximum) 29 hours/week.

 

Knowledge & Responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Environmental Education
    1. Prepares supplies for each day of summer camp and assist with daily summer camp operations. 
    2. Leads summer camp games, activities, and educational programs.
    3. Routinely updates educational displays.
    4. Coordinates and leads nature activities and public programs. 
  • Educational Animal Exhibits
    1. Maintains insect collection traps and distributes insects among captive wildlife. 
    2. Maintains the cleanliness of wildlife enclosures and insures adequate water is supplied.
    3. Maintains accurate records related to the feeding, care, and maintenance of exhibits. 
  • Visitor Engagement and Programming 
    1. Interacts with visitors and provides accurate information related to programs, facility rentals, and recreational activities. 
    2. When necessary answers the phone and gives detailed information about Howell Woods. 
    3. Performs other duties as assigned

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:  This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.  
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

Mathematical Skills                                                      

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.   
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

Reasoning Ability                                              

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

Computer Skills                                                

To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient with Microsoft Office.
