Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
 

Knowledge of:

Operational characteristics, services and activities of a comprehensive athletics program.

  

Must possess knowledge of principles, rules and regulations pertaining to the relevant sport.

 

Organizational and management practices as applied to the evaluation of programs, policies and operational

needs. 

 

Principles and practices of program development and administration.

 

Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.

 

English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

 

Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
 

Ability To:

 

Interpret and explain college athletics, policies and procedures.

 

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; prepare clear and concise reports.

 

Implement and prepare statistics for a variety of sports.

 

Learn rules and regulations of NJCAA guidelines and proper procedures.

 

Provide leadership; serve as a role model; set high standards and represent the institution well; professional in dress, conduct and attitude.

   

Ability to travel and work nights and weekends. 

 

Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.

 

Ability to communicate and interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations in the

Maintain a positive relationship and rapport with all student-athletes.

-           making observations

-           identifying and participating in events and programs to market CFCC

-           operating assigned equipment.

 

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 

Minimum Education/Training:

Associate’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
 

Candidate must have a valid driver license.

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:

 

Bachelor’s Degree preferred

Playing/coaching experience is preferred and/or supplemented by two or more years of post-secondary, collegiate or professional coaching experience

Position Description

DEFINITION

To manage, oversee, and coach a NJCAA sponsored sport at Cape Fear Community College. 

Responsibilities include all aspects of operating a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) sport program including, but not limited to, instruction, recruitment, team and game management, budgeting, travel arrangements, scheduling, advisement, and leadership. 

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general direction from the Director of Athletics.  

Coordinate with and assist other coaching staff, work-study students, game management personnel, and volunteers.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS 

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following.

Teaching individual athletic performance and development; implementing an academic success program, coordinating a recruiting strategy; administrative work related to team travel, purchasing, equipment and expenditures.

Overall planning, developing, and organizing a Junior College athletic program. 

Responsible for adhering to the policies and regulations of Cape Fear Community College and NJCAA.

Support the philosophy and mission of the College.

Provide integrity, high principles and demonstrate skill in developing and motivating student-athletes academically and athletically.

Ensure compliance in respect to academic eligibility for student athletes. 

Comply with all NJCAA rules and procedures in a framework of good sportsmanship and ethical conduct.

Monitor academic progress while encouraging effective study habits to improve graduation and retention rates; aid with academic advising to each student.

Responsible for recruiting highly skilled student-athletes to represent Cape Fear Community College on the court/field, as well as in the classroom.

Coordinate and work with the student-athlete, admissions and academic registrar during the admission process.

Prepare and work within a specific budget set by the Director of Athletics.

Recommend purchase, distribution and care of equipment, supplies and uniforms as appropriate.

With approval, purchase equipment and uniforms, while maintaining records of all purchases and correspondence.

Maintain all paperwork/receipts and return to Director of Athletics the next business day to comply with general purchasing and business services requirements and guidelines.

Supervise student-athletes during all College sponsored activities including, but not limited to, practice, scheduled games and sport related travel; responsible for all aspects of traveling (food, transportation, hotel, etc.)

Oversee and formulate a successful philosophy to promote the educational welfare and sportsmanship of the student-athlete; develop values of discipline and promote good sportsmanship to properly represent Cape Fear Community College.

Work with acting SID in the promotion of the sport/program (i.e. website, media information, etc.) 

Establish and maintain an effective working relationship and positive image with those involved, including a variety of college and government officials, community groups, the general public and the Sea Devil family. 

Build and maintain effective relationships with student-athletes, coaches, and CFCC faculty and staff.

Provide leadership; serve as a role model; set high standards and represent the institution well; professional in dress, conduct and attitude.

Develop a fall and spring schedule; create a practice and competitive game schedule to include the coordination and scheduling of facilities, set-up and personnel (facilities, times etc.). 

Work within the athletic budget set by the Director of Athletics.

Accountable for game management including half-time entertainment (National Anthem, set-up of facility,

staff, etc.); assist with game-day operations and management as needed.
 

Assist and provide potential college-related athletic news; press releases; pitch story ideas to members of the athletic department in respects to the sport.

Assist and provide proper representation in respects to media coverage and promote the College’s junior college athletic program through media, social media, printed publications, Internet, advertising and promotional materials.  

Prepare and disseminate daily statistical information required by the College, conference, regional and national affiliations, including local media outlets. 

Contribute to the maintenance of the collegiate athletic website and historical statistical records by providing up-to-date statistics as required by the NJCAA (www.goseadevils.com).

Work closely with the Director of Athletics keeping him/her abreast of all planning, organizing, staff and development of the respective sport. 

 

Other Important Functions:

Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills

Attend and participate in professional group seminars/meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of coaching.

Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
