Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in counseling, business, education or a related field.  Excellent human relations and communication skills. Must be proficient in utilizing MS Office Products, making public presentations, analyzing, summarizing, and reporting student success data to multiple stake holders. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in counseling, business, education or a related field, experience in teaching at the high school and/or secondary level, experience serving as a career coach, guidance counselor, or academic advisor.

Position Description

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

The Career Coach will assist Central Haywood High School students with determining career goals and identifying community college programs that would enable them to achieve academic and career success. Located in a rural area of North Carolina, this small alternative high school – 114 students and 9 teachers –serves a diverse and high need student body. Community Eligibility Percentage (CEP) is 98.44% but 100% of these students are situationally disadvantaged.

** This is a time-limited, grant-funded position that works up to 20 hours per week at Central Haywood High School **
 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Provide on-site student centric career and academic advising to Central Haywood High School Students
  • Assists students in identifying personal goals
  • Assists students in identifying career choices based on intrinsic interests and current employment data
  • Assists students in aligning interests with allied community college programs of study.
  • Encourages students to participate in extracurricular career activities i.e., Skills USA, healthcare or government volunteer, etc.
  • Tracks all interactions with students for state reporting purposes
  • Pursues professional development opportunities to promote student success
  • Integrates career and academic advising into the operating context and physical location of Central Haywood High School
  • Presents annually to HCC Program Advisory Boards
  • Prudently follows up on all communication and inquiries with stakeholders
  • Promotes communication concerning career and college coaching between non-student stakeholders including parents, guardians, teachers, staff, and local employers
  • Promote Community College opportunities to students
  • Follows all necessary guidelines at both Haywood County Schools and Haywood Community College
  • Makes frequent public presentations concerning NC Works Career Coach services
  • Travels within Haywood County to meet with stakeholders on a regular basis
  • Collaborates with Public Information Office to produce Career Coach service promotional materials.
  • Meets with program Faculty advisors and Dean’s on a semester basis to stay current with program changes and recommendations.
  • Works with IPG Coach and HCC Office of Institutional Research to prepare annual reports for the NC Innovative Partnership Grant
  • Keeps detailed case management records for students seeking career coaching
  • Follows all student record privacy rules and regulations
  • Refers students in need of additional non-academic assistance to appropriate Student Service’s Staff.
  • Participates in all mandatory advising training.
  • Pursues membership in local, regional, and national professional career counseling organizations.
  • Provides annual report on activities to HCC President, HCC Executive Council, and Haywood County School Superintendents.
  • Participate in college governance including hiring committees, instructional affairs meetings, student services meetings, etc. as requested.
