Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Journalism, English, Communication, Marketing, or a closely related field, and a minimum of two years of experience is required. Candidate must be a self-starter and possess strong organizational, leadership, diplomatic, and communication (written and verbal) skills with experience in writing a variety of publications ranging from news releases, speeches, scripts, advertising, brochures, and newsletters. Must have social media experience, as well as excellent computer skills, including email, graphic design, photo manipulation, pagination, layout, slide presentation, and spreadsheets. Work may include evenings and weekend activities. Must be able to perform duties inside and outside under normal environmental conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

Graphic design, publication layout, webpage design, and photography experience are preferred. Experience working with educational institutions is preferred. A National Career Readiness Certificate and bilingual are preferred.

Position Description

The Public Information Officer (PIO) is responsible for informing the public of various aspects of the college to promote a positive image of the institution. The PIO will write and distribute press releases, public service announcements, and feature articles related to the college; respond to media inquiries and solicit media coverage; respond to public inquiries for information; coordinate media interviews; interview students and college personnel and other constituents for quotes and personal interest stories; provide photographs of newsworthy events and people to press and other stakeholders, as appropriate; serve as spokesperson for the college as needed; serve as the point of contact for the North Carolina Community College System; maintain positive relationships with other PIOs and members of the press; serve as the point of contact for media during emergencies, crises, or disasters involving the college; manage certain aspects of the college’s website; and maintain a college-wide calendar of events.
